Bible Christian Church dates back to 1882
(EDITOR’S NOTE: The following piece was written by the Rev Dean McFadden in 1981. Rev. McFadden came to the Bible Christian Church in 1981. Rev. Lonnie Nicholl is the church's current pastor.) On June 11, 1881, a group of 14 people from various backgrounds met together to form The Christian Church of North Webster. Members of the Christian and Brethren denominations made up the group under the leadership of Rev. James Atchison. Their purpose was one despite their different backgrounds. Each Wrong positions were listed In last week's edition, we featured a photograph of the new owners of the Templo Filadelfia Church, Syracuse. The people in the photograph were listed correctly, however, Mario Rodriquez is the church treasurer, not the secretary and pastor as noted, Domingo Melendez is the secretary and pastor. We apologize for any inconveniences this error may have caused. Motherdaughter program held The Milford First Brethren WMS held its annual MotherDaughter Program on May 3. with about 90 mothers and daughters in attendance. The evening meal consisted of all types of salads, jellos, and various bar cookies. After the meal. Dorthea Kerlin gave a short devotion using Psalms 100 as her text. Wanema Hardin appeared as "Rainbow the Clown " playing music on her electric keyboard and presenting a magic show. She also made balloon animals for the children. The committee for the evening consisted of Judy Tinkel, Nedra Dobbins. Dorthea Kerlin and Deb Mast. The next meeting will be held on June 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Center. Tracy Miller will be the hostess and Sue Price the leader.

member wanted to start a church that stood for the Bible and bore the name Christian as its brand of belief. The church met in a school house at the junction of CR 500 N and CR 700E about three miles southeast of North Webster. At that time the corner was known as “Happy Corner” because of the jubilant praise that took place in the church. The Christian Church as it was then called, was started in 1857 by Phillip Gigler. The building that was erected under his ministry was destroyed by lightning. History of the church is sketchy at this time. Apparently the members disbanded until 1882. It was then that the Christian Church was organized by the circuit riding Atchison. During the pastorate of Jacob Rittenhouse (the church's second pastor) the present building was built. It was erected in 1887 at a cost of $1,277.98 with much of the construction work done by Levi Miller and his sons. The land on which the church sets was purchased from Jonah and Helen Quackenbush with the stipulation that the church remain at the location. Shortly after its founding. Importance of forgiving others
By MARIETTA FULLER Guest Feature Writer
In Matthew 6:12 we read: “And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors." Some churches use “trespasses" instead of “debts, ’’ but all use the word as'. In other words, our sins cannot be forgiven unless we forgive others. The people of almost 2.000 years ago cried out, "Crucify Him ! " but as Jesus was on the Bashor Home Auxiliary to meet The Bashor Home Auxiliary will meet in the Arbogast Center. Bashor Home. Goshen, on Monday. May 14. the Eel River Conference of the Christian Church. Dissention developed between those of Brethren background and Christian Church members. The Brethren left and formed two churches about the turn of the century. These churches are the North Winona Brethren and the North Webster Brethren Church. During the 1880 s, 1890 s, and early 1900 s, many pastors filled the pulpit of The Christian Church of North Webster including two women. Most of these pastors were part-time, dividing their time between two churches in the conference. Each church would have a pastor every other week. Despite this awkward arrangement the church grew. In 1895 a Ladies Aid was formed to allow the women of the body to take an active part in the ministry. Membership in the church numbered around 60. Discipline was strict in the early days of the church. The minutes from the November 16, 1895 business meeting describe the dismissal of a female member for “. . . unbecoming language used about one of our sisters.” Other members were dropped from the church role for various offenses generally
cross He said. “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). If Jesus on the cross could forgive others, we know that our Heavenly Father would not forgive us our sins unless we also forgive others. And the Bible says this is true in Matthew 6:14-15, “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." What are our trespasses against others? The Bible answers this. “Judge not. that ye be not judged. " (Matthew 7:1); “Whosoever is angry with his brother without cause shall be in danger of the judgement" (Matthew 5:2); “. . a whisperer (of gossip) separateth chief friends" (Proverbs 16:28); “Grudge not one against another . . . lest ye be condemned” (Jamess:9); return good for evil or "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. ' (Matthew 7:12). True forgiveness is forgetting.

described as “misconduct.” In 1899 the church adopted the title of “North Webster Christian Church.” At that time the membership role read like a “Who's Who” in North Webster history. Such prominent names as Mock, Weade, Strombeck and Kuhn dominated the list. Many of these members and some of the early pastors lie buried behind the church in the old Mock Cemetery. The church continued to have part-time ministers from 1900 until 1934. The conference supplied the pastors on a rotating basis. Membership in the church fluctuated between the mid 30s and the late 50s. The Sunday School became well developed in the 20s boasting of as many as 76 enrolled in all of the classes. The year 1934 marked a new era for the church. Pastor B. A. Kaufman became minister and served 11 years. He was the first full-time pastor working solely with this church. Under his leadership revivals were regularly held and the spiritual tempo of the church was raised. In 1938 a vestibule was added. Other remodeling was done during his pastorate. Classrooms were added to the rear of the church. God
How can we forgive others? We cannot forgive in our own power. So, we must confess our sins, ask to be filled with the Spirit (Eph 5:18-20), and ask Jesus to help us to live right. Truly, it is very important to forgive others so that we can have spiritual life and works of love for Christ. blessed the congregation during this term as pastor. When Kaufman resigned, the church had grown to become a mature body and a sound testimony in the community. The name of the body had been changed in 1943 to Mock Community Christian Church. The late 1940 s and 50s brought many changes in the church. The church broke away from the Christian Congregation Conference and joined the Conservative Christian Congregational Conference. This was done to maintain a strong stand on conservative beliefs. Missions became a major interest of the

The church was now able to provide a parsonage for the pastor and the church building was remodeled. The name of the church was once again changed to North Webster Christian Church in 1957. The need was recognized for a constitution for the church to be drafted. Work on the constitution was begun under Pastor Jack Riggs in 1957 and completed in 1959 under Leßoy Stuckey. Church dissolved its association with the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference in January of 1962. The church was now a completely independent body. The original stand of the church was not changed and it still maintained the Bible as its sole authority. The 1960 s and early 1970 s proved to be a time of testing for the body. The pastor at the time became seriously ill and was hospitalized for three months. Financially the church was strained to the limits. Through all of the trials the church found God faithful.
Early members of the church worshiped under the name of The Christian Church. They wanted a name that stood for the Bible and that bore the name of Christian as its brand of belief. After naming, changing, and renaming the church five times, the Bible Christian Church was finally established. (Photo by Stacey- Lesch)
