Spanish students bring honors to WHS

YOUNG PUPPETEERS — In observance of National Library Week, students in Mrs. Lera Rinker’s fourth grade produced puppet plays about parts of books they enjoyed. SOUTHERN PEN PALS — Mrs. Charlotte Morrill’s second grade class at the Milford School has been corresponding with their Pen Pals since the beginning of the 1989-90 school year. Mrs. Morrill says her children enjoy comparing the Mallard Creek School second graders, in Charlotte, N.C., with themselves. So far, the Milford class has received two packets of letters from North Carolina and is now awaiting the third. Each of Mrs. Morrill’s students has also sent an individual photograph to the pen pals, as well as pictures of the Milford playground and the school itself. The children also received pictures of their Pen Pals. Students are shown holding letters and pictures they received from North Carolina. In front is Sara Moore and Carrie Walton. Allen County and the IPFW Modern Foreign Language Department, the festival involved approximately 1,000 students from 40 schools in northeastern Indiana. Wawasee High School, who never before had participated in the festival, walked away

with eleven blue ribbons. In the declamation event, students were to orally present a memorized poem or dramatic excerpt in the foreign language. The criteria for judging included fluency, pronunciation, use of voice, interpretation, appropriateness of material for level, and overall effect.

Jenna DeSomer won first prize in Spanish Level Three for her presentation of Federico Garcia Lorca’s “Romance de la Luna, Luna.” Deanna Deßolf won first prize in Spanish Level Four for her presentation of “Anoche Cuando Dormia,” by Antonio Machado. Another event in the festival was the opportunity for students to create a video in a foreign language. The criteria for judging included the ■ quality and quantity of the foreign language usage, flow of production, technical aspects, and creativity. Winning first prize in the Level Four Spanish video contest were Rhonda Bailey, Sylvia Cole, Cristina denHartog, Deanna Deßolf, Rob Harrington. Janelie Jennings, Tonya Perzanowski, Jim Riffle and Krista Zimmerman. The Spanish Four students created a science fiction story entitled, “Amor en Cualquier Idioma.”

NAMED ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLAR — Derek Smith, 1988 Wawasee High School graduate, has recently been named an AllAmerican Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. Smith is a sophomore at Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, La. He was nominated for this national award by Peter Herliky, sponsor. He will appear in the AllAmerican Scholar Directory which is published nationally. The United States Achievement Academy established the AllAmerican Scholar Award Program in order to offer deserved recognition to superior students who excel in academic disciplines. Scholars must earn a 3.3 or better grade-point average and be selected by a college school instructor, counselor or other qualified sponsor. “Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in American history. Certainly, winners of the AllAmerican Scholar Awards should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement." said Dr. George Stevens, executive director of the USAA. Smith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Halsey. Syracuse, and the grandson of Mrs. Louis Firestone, Syracuse, and Robert Smith, Chesterfield, Mo.

Local students are named Hoosier Scholars

Andrew Eberly, r 1, box 158E. Milford, and Scott Berkey, r 3. box 8, Syracuse, have been named winners of the 1990-91 Hoosier Scholar Awards. Governor Evan Bayh recently announced that only 807 graduating seniors from Indiana high schools received the award.

Hoosier Scholars, under a pro gram authorized by the Indiana General Assembly, receive SSOO cash awards to be used to pay costs of higher education. The program’s purpose is to recognize superior scholarship

RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP — Darcey Smith, a senior at Wawasee High School, has been awarded the Davenport College Presidential Scholarship of $2,500 to be used over the next six terms at Davenport College of Business, Grand Rapids. Mich. She plans to major in travel and tourism. Saturday evening, at a banquet at Camp Mack. Miss Smith was inducted into the Academic Hall of Fame at Wawasee High School. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Halsey, Syracuse, and the granddaughter of Mrs. Louis Firestone. Syracuse, and Robert Smith, Chesterfield. Mo.
