Safety Kids help parents help children

Safety Kids — Safety First . It's sad to think that this country needs a “Child Abuse Prevention Month." But it doesand April is the designated month. Special tools are needed to fight the war against child abuse of all types — including sexual, emotional and physical. Instilling resilience and self-esteem, without scaring kids to death is important task for parents and other child care professionals. One useful and entertaining way to do just that is through music. A catchy tune with a memorable refrain can painlessly send the message of safety to vulnerable youngsters. Brite Music tapes feature “Safety Kids." Through the use of a tape, an activity book and parental guidance, Safety Kids Club members can learn — “I'm in Charge," "The Safety Don'ts” "The Telephone Song" and “Yell and Scream. " For example. ' The Togetherness Kids" is all about the buddy system, one catchy verse proclaims. ' The Togetherness’ Kids, the Togetherness Kids — As compatible as soda and fizz."

later this afternoon when the officer was available. Police responded to a complaint of a dog loose and getting into someone’s garbage on Carroll Street. The officer located the dog, but could not do anything as the dog was in its yard at the time.

In another lesson, kids are taught to “Look for a Grandma,” when they're in a bad situation. Moms with children are also good candidates for lending a helping hand. Experts who work with kids feel good about the Safety Kids approach. Talitha Day Fair, Ph D., a professional with SELAH Center, Inc., in Warsaw, says, “The Safety tape on personal safety has a good balance of teaching prevention without arousing undue fear. In one case, it also enabled a child to open up the first time about being molested.” The program has also been endorsed by a member of the Department of Child Psychiatry at the Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Even a medical doctor t- who also happens to write a newspaper column — has been moved to endorse the Safety Kids tape. Glen C. Griffin says, “Janeen Brady (creator of the program) has come through again with a great cassette tape of clever songs and dialogue by the Safety Kids to teach kids how to keep themselves-straight.” Safety Kids is available locally. VCS one year old and growing

It’s been a little over a year since Volunteer Community Services of Kosciusko County obtained a three-year grant through United Way to begin operations. VCS director Doris Ann Slaymaker says the agency has enjoyed much success so far, but there is room for improvement — in the way of ‘ ‘more volunteers 1' ’ VCS is a non-profit organization, meant to match up willing volunteers with other non-profit agencies in the county that need free help. Os 47 different nonprofit agencies in Kosciusko, Slaymaker has been able to help 32 of them in locating volunteers. VCS applicants are interviewed by Slaymaker, who ascertains where their skills could best be applied. But “skills,” as such, aren't really required, points out Slaymaker; all that is needed is the willingness to get out and work with people. Says Slaymaker, “I know peo-

ple could get a lot more fulfillment, sense of oneness with the community, if they just got involved. It’s the getting involved and the time that’s the problem.” In the course of aC.year. Slaymaker has interviewed 175 people, 131 who remain in\ her files to call upon for volunteer work. At any given time, she remarks, approximately 30 names in the files are inactive due to surgery, illness, vacation, etc. She age-groups her volunteers according to “teens,” "younger,” “middle-aged” and “retired.” Records indicate that for the first year five female and two male teens volunteered time; 39 female and 19 male young people did the same; 27 female and five male middle-aged individuals donated their services; and 26 female and eight male retirees were volunteers as well. At the end 0f>1989, VCS volunteers had donated a total of 2,396 hours. For the first three months of 1990 alone, VCS volunteers have given 1,248 hours of time. Slaymaker is pleased with the progress this indicates. She is also plea«edwith the help some area-businesses, organizations and individuals have given VCS. The agency is still located in the original office space found upstairs at the Combined Community Services building (212 E. Market. Warsaw). Much furniture and equipment, as well as helping hands and paint, were

donated to make the office complete. Last spring, Rice Ford donated a car to VCS, which is used to transport clients outside the county for medical treatments. Gas to run the car is often donated by clients, clubs and various other organizations. In March of 1990, the VCS vehicle and volunteers’ personal cars made a total of 44 medical trips and logged 1,699 miles — peak numbers, according to Slaymaker. “Though I think there’s been steady progress and success in the program,” says Slaymaker, “I also think there is still great need for volunteers in the county. I don’t want to overtax or burnout the volunteers I have.” Wanting to recognize volunteers for their work, Slaymaker presents a monthly Volunteers are Priceless award. VCS volunteers, who represent a cross-section of the county, will also be honored at a luncheon April 23. during National Volunteer Week, observed April 22-28. Putty Knife I read with interest a hint about using a putty knife to open a can of cocoa. I use a clean paint-can lid opener. They are found, of course, ata/paint dealer. Many times when you buy a can of paint, the openers are given away as a promotional gift. However, using the putty knife as a cookie remover sounds like a good idea.
