Milford United Methodist Church was rebuilt after fire of 1920
j By STACEY LESCH Staff Writer (EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is compiled from past MailJournal articles and written accounts from members of the Milford Methodist Church.) On May 8, 1920, the townspeople of Milford were enjoying a lazy Saturday. Neighbors were chatting, children were playing, and birds were singing. It was a calm, serene day in the town, until 3:30 that afternoon. “Fire.” The shrilling scream almost instantly brought people running toward the Methodist Church, located at the corner of Catherine and West streets. The large church, which was built in 1900, was on fire and the fire was burning out of control. Firemen and townspeople were unable to save the structure and said a final farewell to one of Milford’s most beautiful churches. The origin of the fire even today, remains a mystery. The building was not all the fire destroyed. Records detailing the church’s history were turned to ash. leaving members of the congregation to recall to the best of their knowledge when and how the church began. For about 140 years, Methodism has been a part of the life of Milford. Records did not Sunrise service at New Salem Members of the New Salem Church of the Brethren, located on the corner of county roads 900 N and 200E. wish to extend an invitation to the Lakeland community to their Sunrise Service and breakfast. give any exact details or dates, but many believe the religion has been in this area since the first settlers came to this part of Indiana. It is further thought that Methodist circuits and circuit riders traveled the wilderness to perform marriage ceremonies and establish Methodist classes. W’hen S. J. North, an early member of the Milford United Methodist Church, came to the area in 1852, there was a small Methodist class established. Mrs. Henry Day organized the first Methodist Sunday School, but because the records were destroyed, the exact date is unknown. On July 11, 1866, a deed was

Almost four years after the fire, the new church was dedicated. Through the years the church as been fortunate to have good pastoral leadership. But just as importantly the lay people have contributed their good leadership, their talents and support, their interest in the work of the United Methodism throughout the world and their convictions about what it means to be the People of God.

Walk Thru returns
The popular Walk Thru the Bible organization is returning to North Webster on April 28. This time to open up the big picture of the New Testament. An event eagerly awaited by those who attended the Old Testament Seminar. The New Testament — wellloved and familiar. Perhaps. But Pastor Steve Fouts of the North Webster Church of God, which is hosting the seminar, urges people to come and discover that they will no longer read the life of Christ as a number of unrelated and isolated activities, nor will they be able to read Acts without realizing there is a chapter still to be written — theirs! And no longer will they fumble to find a topic in the Epistles locked in their memory system. Because of
