Drug problems of the post
I By PAUL W. KAUFFMAN Guest Feature Writer
In these times of great concern for the drug problems, there must be many of our older folks who recall the over the counter “medicine show” crisis back at the turn of the century. Prior to enactment of the pure food and drug laws, the American market was literally flooded with so-called fast acting preparations which promised almost instant cure of every physical and mental ailment known to mankind! Many of those concoctions contained a small amount of cocaine to make them habit forming, and a liberal lacing of alcohol to create a false illusion of wellbeing. Under their influence, many glowing testimonials to their effectiveness were written and published! Dr. William B. Page, who practiced medicine in Middlebury from about 1895 to 1910 (except for a one year stint as a missionary in India) and in Goshen from that time until the middle 19205, once told me that CocoCola had been found by the medical profession to contain suf-

ficient cocaine to render it habit forming and give it a sales advantage over competing products on the market. Evangelist Billy Graham, in a recent telecast, pinpointed 1903 as the year when the drug was finally eliminated from the Coke formula to bring it to compliance with federal law. Paul Harvey, the radio and TV figure, has also commented on the one time cocaine in Coca-Cola in one of his books detailing little known facts related to news stories of the past. Aside from his medical practice, Dr. Page, in 1898, established the first area telephone exchange in his Middlebury home, but a year later sold his interest before he took off for service in India. After his return, he erected a concrete block building in 1904 for his office on the north side of the 200 block of East Warren Street. In 1910, he sold that building to the telephone company and moved his medical practice to Goshen, locating in the 200 block of East Lincoln Avenue. The telephone company originated by Dr. Page soon ex-
