Grace Lutheran proud to be part of the history of Syracuse area
(EDITOR’S NOTE — The following is a revised version of an original article written by Rev. Richard Dunning. Rev. Dunning wrote the piece for a special “Cruzin Around ’Cuse” feature in 1986.) Research has revealed that, as it did in many other places, religion played an important part in the history and development of this area, and Grace Lutheran Church is happy to have been a small part of that history. The exact details concerning the growth of Lutheranism in the area around Syracuse, including the founding date of Grace Lutheran Church, are not known. Evidently, though, a number of Lutherans came to the area not long after it was opened for settlement in 1837, when the town of Syracuse was platted by Henry Ward and Samuel Crawson. It wasn’t long after that a number of businesses and churches began to spring up in Syracuse, including the group of Lutherans who established a place of worship just north of town. To the best of our knowledge, Grace Lutheran Church has its roots in that early congregation which was known as the Union Lutheran Church. Records show that when the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Northern Indiana was formed at Columbia Dates incorrect In the March 28 issue of ‘the PAPER’, the dates for the Festival of Praise, which will be presented by the Na.ppanee Missionary Church Sanctuary Choir, were incorrect. The correct dates are Friday, April 6, and Sunday, Aprils, at 7 p.m. Senior Pastor Dave Engbrecht invites the public to attend "A Celebration of Worship and Praise.” A variety of music will be featured throughout the evening. The church is located two miles north of Nappanee on SR 19. We apologize for the error.

members was Union Lutheran Church of Syracuse. The church’s delegates to that synod convention were the pastor, Rev. G. Walker and I.W. Kitson. Kitson was appointed to the committee to write a constitution for the new synod, indicating that Union Lutheran Church had been organized about 1855 or earlier. They called themselves “new Lutherans” because of their revivalistic tendencies. In fact, the church had achieved quite a reputation for holding loud revival meetings, a rather unusual characteristic of Lutherans. The congregation remained in the new Northern Indiana Synod for a few years and then began to fade. Finally, with the organization of the Evangelical Church at Solomon’s

Creek, the Union Lutheran Church of Syracuse passed into history. Thus there had been some formal Lutheran activity in the Syracuse community before Rev. Moses M. Bartholomew organized Grace Church in 1861. Rev. Bartholomew had come to the northern Indiana area from Ohio and began working with the German Lutherans here. Although the church was organized in 1861, no permanent record was made of the constitutional proceedings or of the number of persons who signed the charter roll. The membership was quite small and they met in each other’s homes for a number of years. This continued until the members of Grace helped the local Church of God to erect a

house of worship and arranged to hold worship services in that building when it was not needed by the other church.
Over the years, the congregation began to experience a steady growth. This growth, plus the fact that their present arrangement with the Church of God was not conducive to more aggressive church work, the members began to think in terms of their own facility. And, although reluctant to give up their first place of worship, the congregation decided early in the pastorate of the Rev. Theodore Weiskotten (1904-1906) that they should build a church of their own — one which would provide better Sunday school facilities and a more distinctly Lutheran sanctuary. The building w'as dedicated in June of 1905. Since, the church has served the congregation well and during the intervening years it has been renovated and redecorated a number of times. Also, current pastor, Rev. Richard Dunning who has served the church since 1985. says the congregation has now formed sub-committees for the purpose of establishing an addition to the church. The addition would house an educational facility and a fellowship hall for the church. The members of Grace are grateful to God for His many blessing throughout its history. They have tried to serve Him well in the past 129 years, and with His grace and guidance will continue to do so in the future.

TO PRESENT LECTURE — Godfrey John, C. 5.8., a Welshborn resident of Toronto, Canada, has been asked to speak at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Goshen, on April 10 at 8 p.m. The lecture will be held in the church edifice at 111 North Fifth Street, which is behind Kline's Department Store next to their parking lot. Christian Scientists welcome the public to attend this free lecture. Child care will be provided. John is a graduate of Cambridge University, England, where he learned of Christian Science. He became a university professor, and is an author and poet. He was once a British amateur heavyweight boxine champion. The title of the lecture will be "What Are You Worth? A Search That Heals." The subject rouses thought to the urgent need for an awareness of what constitutes individual and collective worth. It does this by highlighting the importance of inner search and discovery. It examines the spiritual basis for the worth of peoples as well as individuals. The lecture is adaptable to national and community situations. The lecture will handle the widespread misconception that spiritual values, though laudable, are worthless in practical terms. It will be shown how Christian Science, with Biblical authority, explains the origin and demonstration of true worth. Several experiences will be related, including the healing of terminal illness, rejection and financial lack.
