Metcalf and Payne has served the area's plumbing, heating needs for 35 years
As the Lakeland area continues to grow, business at Metcalf and Payne, Inc., North Webster, has become “fantastic and very busy.” The firm provides installation and service of plumbing, heating and air conditioning, both residential and commercial. The busiest time at the business is spring and fall. In the spring, the company sees that over 200 lake homes are ready for owners. Time is spent going over all plumbing, heating and air conditioning equipment and making sure all is in working order. When fall arrives, the company goes back to these homes and sees the equipment is prepared for the winter months, when no one will be there. The firm is also engaged in remodeling of bathrooms, new construction and replacement of furnaces. Metcalf and Payne, Inc., is owned by Phil and Eve Payne. Phil noted that if there is a slow time in the business, “it would have to be in March." He explained this is when the winter work is done, and it is to early to start the necessary spring work. In addition to Phil and Eve, who takes care of the office work, the firm has five other employees. Doug Bowser has worked there for 28 years; Doug Metcalf. 20 years; and Tony Perry, six years
Milford Floral and Gift brings fresh flowers to area
Almost everyone — except the allergy prone — enjoys getting flowers. They brighten up a sick person's day and show your loved ones just how much you care. These days, Milford area residents are saying how they feel with flowers from Milford Floral and Gift. The shop opened in November of 1989 and Brenda Peterson, who owns Milford Floral and Gift with husband Rodney, says business is good. Peterson bought out stock from Smith’s Flowers when it went out of business and used it to begin her own enterprise. She got into the business on a “hunch” and the idea that “Milford needed another flower shop.” They’ve been kept busy ever since, doing all occasions, including birthdays, funerals and special holidays. Two other employees, Nathan Moore and Rick Luther, are enrolled in the apprenticeship program to obtain their state plumbing licenses. They travel to Fort Wayne two nights a week to attend classes and are in their third year of school. A law passed in 1982 requires all those people engaged in plumbing work of any kind to be licensed. Metcalf and Payne, Inc., require all employees to hold an Indiana Plumbing License in compliance with the state law. 35 Years In Business The business, located at Camelot Square was started in January 1955 in Bill Metcalf’s garage. Payne and Metcalf co-owned the business. In 1957 the former jewelry store on Main Street was purchased and the business was operated from that location until 1971. Metcalf and Payne purchased an additional building for use as a warehouse in 1968. The Main Street location was sold to make way for the International Palace of Sports and Counting House Bank. The warehouse was remodeled. In 1982 Metcalf retired and the Paynes became the sole owners. The business is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m., until noon and 1-4:30 p.m.
