Cotton and Cotton incorporates agencies

Opening shop 6*/ 2 years ago, Dave and Sally Cotton received a warm response from the community concerning their business, Cotton and Cotton Insurance, Inc. That response still continues to increase as does the business itself. In 1989 alone, the Cotton's were able to purchase two insurance agencies which they incorporated into their firm. In January of 1989, the Pickwick Insurance Agency, owned by Robert Troutman, was merged with Cotton and Cotton. The Cotton Cotton name has been installed at the Pickwick location and Troutman still continues to sell and service insurance with the firm. In September of 1989, the Beth Flinn Agency of Pierceton was also purchased. Again, the Cotton and Cotton name now appears on the Pierceton location. Another important name should be added to the Cotton and Cotton list of pluses. Ron Beasley joined the firm in 1988 as a partner to the Cottons when they felt the business warranted an addition. Experienced in the business, Beasley was eager to unite his efforts with Cotton and Cotton. He began his insurance career as a commercial underwriter, moving on to regional field representative and spent the last 10 years as vice president of a large insurance agency in Fort Wayne. Dave Cotton, who has been in insurance 21 years, had previously worked in corporate positions with various companies. Most recently, he was the regional manager with the CNA Insurance company in New Jersey. -Along with numerous other certifications, Cotton isaCLU. MAD has served Milford since 1970

By STACEY LESCH Staff Writer Organized in 1970 by a group of local business owners to promote additional retail and industrial business growth, the Milford Area Development Council, Inc. today tries to encourage local businesses to take an interest in the town. In 1988 a start to involve greater attendance at the monthly meetings requested representatives from the ministerial association, town board, and emergency medical service to get involved. Today those representatives continue to be active on the council. One of the most significant projects MAD undertook in its 20-year history was the building of the community building. Funded solely through donations, rentals to private parties and the annual Memorial Day chicken barbecue, the building has proven a great asset to this small community. It today houses the REAL Services program and provides a place of meeting to local groups and organizations. Carol Speicher is custodian and building caretaker. Fred Weisser, Elmer Sorensen and Dick Smith are in charge of building maintenance. Another major accomplishment of MAD took place in 1989. President John Replogle brought to the council’s attention that a strip of land located directly behind the community building was being offered for sale. After negotiations Chore-Time/Brock, Maple Leaf Farms, and Barth Corp.

“total account selling.” By this, they are hoping to provide individuals with all possible types of insurance needs, whether that involves personal business, life, disability, hospitalization, major medical, auto renters, or any other form of insurance. Although the group works as a team on each account, each specializes in certain areas. Sally Cotton handles personal insurance, Beasley and Troutman deal primarily with commercial insurance, and Dave Cotton works with life, group, disability, and pensions insurance. Also, staff members Eleanor Moore and Jeannette Gaskins combine a total of 16 years experience in sales and servicing of claims. One of the many advantages Cotton and Cotton Insurance has over other companies is its quick claims service. It works with companies which it feels are quick and efficient. In dealing with these same companies, both the insurance company and claims agent become personally involved with the clients. There are even certain claims that can be paid directly out of office. Some of the companies Cotton and Cotton insures its clients through are Security Mutual, Hastings Mutual, Auto Owners, Central Mutual, Blue Cross-Blue Shield, Meridian Mutual, Financial Security Group, Bankers, Mutual Benefit, Indiana Insurance, American Community, Trans America, Occidental Life, Cincinnati Insurance, and American States. No matter how small or how large a person's insurance needs are, Cotton and Cotton Insurance is there to lend a hand. It is the agency with the small town touch in a big, big way.

donated the $3,000 necessary the council needed to purchase the land. The purchase was an important one as the land, once part of a vacant lot to the north of the community building, could have jeopardizing the EMS entrance if sold to another business. In 1988 MAD gave the Milford Citizen of the Year Banquet a new twist. Calling it the Milford Community Recognition Night, they presented an honorary award to volunteer groups for services to the community. Groups such as the EMS, ministerial association, volunteer firemen. Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Youth League organization, library board, and others are considered to receive this honor. Previous honorees have included the Milford EMS and the Milford Volunteer Fire Department. Although MAD does actively take part in improving the Milford community. Replogle says, “We try to stay out of controversial issues.” MAD members for 1990 include the following: President, John Replogle; vice president, Gary Hurd; treasurer, Don Arnold; assistant treasurer, John Lehman; secretary, Dennis Schori; assistant secretary, Clark Jones; building maintenance, Fred Weisser, Elmer Sorensen, Dick Smith; custodian and building caretaker, Carol Speicher; EMS representative, Dennis Replogle; ministerial association, Chris Mahan, Donn Kesler, Dick Smith, Bob Rassi; Lake City Bank representative. Jay W. Heireman.
