Seeking freedom, An Tran brought his family from Vietnam to North Webster
. By MARY JANE LORTON Staff Writer It had been 10 years since this family "joined" the membership of the North Webster Church of God. On Sunday, March 25, the North Webster congregation celebrated this special anniversary. While the church may not formally celebrate every anniversary of every member — not every member has travelled from the other side of the world to join this church. Through the collaborative efforts of its parishioners, the North Webster Church of God brought the Tran family from Vietnam to this Lakeland community. Profile Father of the family. An, said the family wanted to come to the United States in order to be free. Living in a communist country did not allow for many liberties, so An decided to take Huong, his wife, and his children. Thanh. Minh. Yen, and Quyen westward. Prior to corfiTng to the United States, the Tran family had to journey to Malaysia where they would live in a refugee camp and would apply for refugee status to the U.S. The Tran family was not alone in its quest for freedom, as the boat the family took to get to Malaysia was packed with about 265 people, said An. For three days and three nights the boat slowly made its way to Malaysia. As the boat was nearing the Malaysian shores. An said a hole was discovered in the boat and it began to sink. An quickly jumped overboard, grabbing onto his family, and he said luckily they were close enough to shore that he could touch the bottom. He had his family quickly jump overboard to safety. The time of the Tran family's travels to Malaysia in 1979 paralleled the period the North Webster Church of God began to consider the possibility of sponsoring a refugee family to come to the U.S. According to Pastor Steve Fouts, in order for a family to get refugee status in the United States, it needs to show sponsorship. Proving sponsorship. according to Pastor Fouts. means being able to show that once a family arrives in the U.S. its basic needs will be provided for. enabling the family to settle into a community. Pastor Fouts said the idea for the project originated in the mission board. "We voted to do it." he said, "and we then prayed that a family be sent to us." He added it took several months to work it out. Back in Malaysia, the Trans were living on the island that An described as a "jail." With water all around, and really noplace to go. the Trans were confined to this refugee camp. Food was provided by the Red Cross and shelter was provided by "whatever we could find." said An. He said they used plastic and wood from trees growing on the mountainside to make their home and they also used limbs to make their beds. < Over 10.000 people were at this refugee camp stated An.
