Ph£nd & Brown offers quality construction

Phend & Brown, Inc. asphalt paving crews and equipment have been a familiar sight on roads and construction sites throughout the region for many years. Having been in the general highway construction business since 1922, the owners attribute the company’s many years of successful operation to a longstanding commitment to reliable service and quality construction. Present operations, in addition to Hot Mix Asphalt paving, include earthwork, sewer and water lines, and production of washed sand and gravel. The company contracts for work with federal, state and local public agencies as well as with private sector developers and individuals. Current projects range in size from a $2.3 million grading contract for three miles of the new South Bend Bypass to numerous driveway and patching projects. Other types of projects include airports, industrial site development, city streets, subdivision roads, tennis courts, running tracks, golf cart and bicycle paths, and parking lots. Phend & Brown, Inc. has one Hot Mix Asphalt production facility located at Leesburg and another at Disco, which is five miles east of Akron on SR 114. These two plants enable the company to serve

“We want to be a salon of the ’9os,” says Sande Wappes, owndr of New Attitudes Hair Studio, Syracuse. “Anymore a salon cannot survive on doing just hair. This is one reason for adding the boutique next to the salon. This adds yet another dimension to the salon and another service for our customers.” x / Located between Dairy Queen and Augsburger’s Supervalu, New Attitudes offers clients and welcomes new customers to try top-of-the-line, quality hair care products such as Scruples, Paul Mitchell, and Vavoom. They are also proud to offer those hard to find services such as manicures, pedicure, application and care of artificial nails, eyebrow arching, upper lip hair removal, facials and make-up applications, ear piercing, perms, coloring and highlighting. There is even a special-order line of hair pieces for both men and women. “People like to come in to a salon and have everything done,” says Kelli Mort, cosmetologist. This is why New Attitudes offers such a wide variety of beauty .needs. New Attitudes Hair Studio employs three qualified and experienced cosmetologists. Although each specializes in the latest hair styles, they also have their own areas of expertise which gives the salon yet another plus. Sande Wappes has been in the profession 18 years, 10 years in Syracuse. She says she knows the characteristics of a good

Kosciusko County as well as portions of Elkhart, Marshall, Noble, Whitley, Fulton, Wabash and Miami counties with quality Hot Mixed Asphalt products and construction. The company’s sand and gravel pit is also located at Leesburg and produces quality washed aggregate materials for Hot Mix Asphalt production and for use in area construction projects. Phend & Brown, Inc. is continuing to emphasize quality into the 1990 s with the implementation of a new quality assurance program. The program features a new testing laboratory at Leesburg equipped with the latest technology in testing equipment for aggregate and Hot Mix Asphalt products. The laboratory is staffed by experienced technicians certified by the state of Indiana to insure the quality of all of the products produced by the company. Robert Brown, company president, notes, “We believe that the construction market of the 1990 s will more than ever before demand quality and value in the materials and services furnished by contractors. Our quality assurance program is just one more example of the “extra mile” we go for our customers, resulting in outstanding service, quality and reliability.”

cosmotologist, which is why she .recruited Kelli Mort and Patty Birkel. Kelli has been with Sande for 2> 2 years. A graduate of the Wawasee/Fairfield Area Vocational Cosmotology School, her areas of expertise include hair styling and facials and make-up applications. Patty, a graduate of Masters of Cosmotology in Fort Wayne, is also a hair stylist, but her area of expertise involves nail makeovers. Manicures, pedicure, and applications of acrylic, gel, and fiberglass artificial nails are her specialties. In keeping with their clients demands, expectations, and needs, Sande, Kelli and Patty are constantly continuing their education in cosmotology by attending seminars and shows. They learn of the latest techniques and products on the market which they in turn incorporate into their daily work. For example, New Attitudes has one of the largest “selections of rods for all kinds of creative perms including those for spiral, Zcurl, flat wrap, double wrap, and hot dog perms. •H ■' v / v / i The first thing friends of the salon or new customers can expect as they enter New Attitudes is the relaxed, comfortable atmosphere of the staff. “We try to make everyone feel at home,” says Kelli. And their happy clientele are the best indicators that the women are doing their jobs professionally and for the customers.
