KCH is serving the medical needs of Kosciusko County
Though located in Warsaw, Kosciusko Community Hospital is just what its name states —a hospital serving the medical needs of all of Kosciusko County. Since opening in 1976, Kosciusko Community Hospital has continually built upon the founding principles of providing quality health care and responding to community needs. “We’re looking for improved ways of serving people in the entire county,” notes KCH President Wayne Hendrix, who began his position at the hospital in January of 1989. Health screening fairs are just one example of how KCH wants to touch outlying communities of the county in more positive ways. The health fairs, one of which has already been sponsored in Etna Green, provide participants with a battery of health checks, all at minimal cost. Some of the checks include blood sugar, cholesterol, weight and blood pressure. The hospital hopes to soon sponsor similar events in communities such as Syracuse and Milford. CHI Systems, an Ann Arbor, Mich., firm specializing in hospital management counseling, was recently called upon by KCH to help assess the health care needs of Kosciusko residents. The firm aided the hospital in defining seven major thrusts of future growth. Emphasis will be placed on ( will

acute care, treatment for women’s illnesses, rehabilitation, ambulatory/outpatient services, long-term health care, treatment for alcohol and drug dependency, and industrial wellness programs. Kosciusko Community Hospital already has taken many steps in meeting these operational goals. KCH operates the only trauma center in the county, capable of treating high degrees of trauma through advanced technology, equipment, physicians and staff. Rehabilitation services have been enhanced in cardiac, cardio-pulmonary and respiratory rehabilitation; a pulmonologist physician recently joined the staff; and occupational and speech therapy programs have been added. In 1990, the hospital is looking toward consolidating rehab programs into one center. Sixty percent of surgeries performed at KCH are done on an outpatient basis, one vital way in which the hospital is able to keep patient costs down. Strategies to reduce costs at KCH include cost containment, ambulatory/outpatient services, networking and diversification. Through cost management programs and budgeting, expenses are held to an absolute minimum. Providing quality health care through the ambulatory unit reduces overall costs due to shorter hospital stays, and is a way in which KCH is able to serve a greater number of people at less cost. Networking links the hospital with group purchasing organizations and is an effective method of trimming expenses. And by diversifying its programs’and facilities — in operating such institutions as Med Park, for treatment of alcohol and drug dependency, and Mason Health Care — KCH keeps utilization of resources up and therefore costs down. The next 10 years will see the development of the Med Park Subdivision, 20 acres north of the hospital along U.S. 30. Hendrix foresees a “regional campus” of medical in-

stitutions and offices being built, broadening the variety of medical care services available to county residents. KCH has been striving to meet the spiritual needs of its patients, as well as the physical ones. A chaplaincy program, established in December of 1989 with one local minister, has since expanded, with 14 ministers county-wide being trained as chaplain associates. KCH personnel are not forgotten either, for, as Hendrix says, “The staff is the most important factor in influencing excellence in patient care.” An
