Flexsteel Industries meets the demand for versatility
Flexsteel Industries Inc. has been at its current location since 1982 when it purchased an existing building on 29 acres south of New Paris for the purpose of manufacturing vehicle seating products. The company’s manufacturing facility is located approximately 29 miles southeast of Elkhart, which is considered the recreational vehicle capital of the world. The location was chosen in order to give “just in time” service to the van and RV industry. This excellent location has also enabled the company to compete and to be recognized as a leader in an area which has a potential market of several hundred van converters and RV manufacturers throughout Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. The first schedule of van seats and sofas to serve these markets started coming down the line in March of 1982. Simultaneously, the New Paris metal plant started producing the frames used in the New Paris upholstery plant and has grown to produce not only the majority of RV frames needed in New Paris, but RV frames for other Flexsteel plants throughout the country. In 1985, the Gerber cutter, a computerized fabric cutting system, was installed at New Paris to cut RV fabric as well as the fabric for the reclining chair division of Evansville.

The company is continually adding products to its line in order to better serve its customers. For example, in 1986, a new line was installed for the production of woodframed furniture for the RV industry. Flexsteel Industries is currently manufacturing 66 styles of van paks and bucket seats, 35 different Magic Beds, 19 swivel rockers, 6 Presto Beds, 3 pick-up seat styles, and 69 styles of metal frames. The variety and versatility of styles allow our customers to sell interiors as personalized as their customers’ tastes. Because of Flexsteel’s continuing growth, plant expansion was needed. The first addition to the existing plant was added in 1983 to house the degreasers and finished metal frames. Another 80,000 square feet was added in 1984, composed of the upholstery plant and the shipping department. An office renovation and enlargement was completed in 1988 and currently a 17,250 square foot addition is underway to increase manufacturing and related operations areas to over 182,000 square feet. The 200 associates of Flexsteel at New Paris are determined to meet the continuing demand for versatility and variety of selection in an ever-changing market. Their commitment is to remain the industry leader in providing the finest quality vehicle seating available.
