Lawrence Birkel Former Syracuse resident Lawrence C. Birkel, 59, Lima, Ohio, died of an apparent heart attack on Wednesday, March 21, 1990, in his home. He was born August 13, 1930, in Springfield, Ohio.; He was married to Catherine Brown who died in 1974. Prior to moving from Syracuse to Lima 18 months ago, he was employed at Roger’s ElectroMatics, Inc., Syracuse and was a member of Eagles Lodge in Syracuse. His survivors include one daughter, Mary Jo Birkel, Lima; one son, Howard Birkel, Syracuse; two grandchildren; and one brother, William F. Birkel, Springfield. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24. at Syracuse Cemetery with Rev. Jim Babbitt officiating. Eastlund-Harris Funeral Home, Syracuse, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Syracuse EMS.. Kitty Fisher Kitty Bernell Fisher, 87, died at 5:43 a.m. Friday, March 23, 1990, in Miller’s Merry Manor. Syracuse. Born July 16, 1902, in Ridgeville, she was the daughter of James and Pearl Kirkpatrick McCartney. She was married to Homer Fisher, w'hodied in 1958. Moving from Chicago, 111., to the North Webster area in 1959, she was retired from A. J. Nystroms Co., Chicago. Mrs. Fisher was a member of North Webster United Methodist Church.

Retired from the Merchant Marines, Mr. McCoy was a member of Kosciusko Lodge 418 F&AM and the American Legion Post 223, Syracuse. Judith Pequignot Judith Ann Pequignot, 46, 2002 N. Robb Rd., Springhill Acres, Warsaw, died at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 1990, in her home, following an extended illness. Born January 19, 1944, in Warsaw, she was the daughter of John and Marie Petro Fisher. On March 19, 1988, in Warsaw, she married Stanley E. Pequignot; he survives. A lifetime Warsaw area resident, she was a circuit court reporter. Mrs. Pequignot was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Warsaw, and Shorthand Court Reporters Association. Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter, Trudi Ann Williams, Warsaw; one son, Beau J. Bricker, Warsaw; two stepsons, Tyler and Todd Pequignot, both at home; one grandson; her parents, John and Marie Fisher, Warsaw; and one brother, William H. Fisher, Syracuse. Born April 3, 1910, in Goshen, he was the son of Charles W. and Mary Elizabeth Method Sparklin. On October 22,1930, in Goshen, he married Melba Coy; she survives. A Syracuse area resident since 1956, he served with the Goshen Fire Department for 25 years and was Goshen’s first fire inspector. He was also a member of Syracuse Police Department for 7‘ 2 years, serving as chief for 2‘ 2 years, prior to his retirement in 1975. Mr. Sparklin served as a deputy with the sheriff's departments in Elkhart and Kosciusko counties and in 1966, he joined Water Safety Patrol on Syracuse and Wawasee lakes. He was a member of First Brethren Church, Syracuse. Surviving in addition to his wife are two half sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Nancy) Miller and Florance Sparklin, Goshen; two half brothers, John J. Sparklin, Millersburg, and Phillip Sparklin, Kissimmee, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Rule, in 1988. Visitation hours are from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 28, in Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, and one hour prior to the services at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 29, in First Brethren Church, Goshen. One killed, one injured in Saturday mishap
A gathering of two college friends who traveled to Muncie to watch their alma mater (Ball State University) play in the NCAA tournament, via television, ended in tragedy early Saturday morning. March 24. At 4:40 a.m. John C. Simmons. 24, 53648 Ashwood Dr.. Granger, was killed in a single-car accident, suffering a broken neck and back. A passenger in the vehicle, Scott Davidson, 23, 202 Argonne Road. Warsaw, suffered a fractured left arm and bruises. Davidson is a reporter/ photographer and sports coordinator for The Papers Incorporated. Police report Simmons, who was driving a 1988 Chevrolet, apparently fell asleep at the wheel.

Driver cited after leaving scene of accident
The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department investigated the following accidents in the Lakeland area recently: Frances Godfrey, 58, no address given, suffered minor bleeding to her head following an accident Sundav, March 25, at 4:45 p.m. on CR 475E north of CR 300 N. She was a passenger in a 1983 Nissan Sentra driven by John R. Godfrey, 23, r 1 Armstrong Road, Leesburg. Godfrey told police he swerved to miss hitting a squirrel and lost control of his vehicle. The car struck an earth embankment with the front

Syracuse, .was taken to Goshen Hospital after he was brought to the fire station at 2:42 p.m.. Saturday. Davidson was asleep at the time of the accident and remembers waking up and climbing out of the car following the accident. Investigating officers have listed the fact that the driver apparently fell asleep and alcohol as contributing factors in the accident. Seat belts were not worn by either person in the vehicle. One investigating officer stated had Simmons been wearing a seat belt it would have prevented his death. The accident occurred on SR 15, 400 feet north of CR 1300 S. two miles south of Silver Lake.

Groves told police he was traveling west in his 1980 Ford when something ran across the road in front of him. He swerved to miss the object causing the vehicle to go off the edge of the road and roll over. Damage was estimated up to $2,500 to the vehicle. Driver Inattention Driver inattention and materials on the road surface were contributing circumstances in a one-vehicle accident Thursday. March 22, at 3:34 p.m. on CR 200E, south of Armstrong Road. Debra K. Neer, 34, r 1 box 143, Cromwell, suffered a fracture/dislocation to her lower leg. Neer told police she was traveling north on CR 200E in her 1979 Chevrolet truck when she lost control of the truck. The truck went off the road and rolled over two-three times. Driver Cited Michael A. Cavender, 23, r 1 box 204. Kimmell, was cited with leaving the scene of an accident that had occurred at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, March 17, on CR 800 N, east of the Syra-Web Road. Unsafe backing and improper lane usage were contributing circumstances in the mishap. Sandra F. Beaty, 47, r 2 box 315-A. Leesburg, suffered contusion/bruise to her head in the accident. observed Cavender backing a 1977 Chevrolet across the road. Beaty stated he could not avoid hitting the other vehicle. After the impact, Cavender reportedly fled west on CR 800 N and turned south on the Syra-Web Road before stopping in the drive-way at the Dave Clayton residence. Cavender got out of the vehicle and fled on foot through a field. Cavendar later came to the sheriff's department and spoke to police about the accident. Damage to Beaty's vehicle was estimated up to $2,500 and up to $5,000 to the vehicle Cavender was driving, registered to James E. Cavender. Setting Sun Causes Accident Glare from the setting sun was listed as" the contributing circumstance in a one-vehicle accident Sunday. March 25, at 7:40 p.m. at CR 400E and CR 1000 N. Linda S. Sheline, 36, 605 Algonquin, Syracuse, was traveling west in her 1978 Ford. She told police the glare from the sun blinded her vision and did not see the road turn ahead. She lost control of the vehicle sliding over a county highway sign. The vehicle turned over on its side in a field. Damage to the vehicle was estimated up to $2,500 and under S2OO to the sign. Looses Control Richard M. Hiner, 19, r 1 box 218, North Webster, lost control of his 1981 AMC Concord after a passing vehicle cut in too close to his vehicle. The accident occurred on Thursday. March 22, at 8:55 p.m. on Backwater Road, east of CR 900E. Hiner's vehicle went off the road hitting a utility pole which caused the electrical service lines into the home of Ken Ott, r 1 box 332, North Webster, to be pulled loose from the home. Damage to the home was estimated up to SI,OOO, up to $2,500 to the utility pole and up to $2,500 to the vehicle.
