IVawasee to host gymnastics sectional on Saturday
By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer
Wawasee High School’s gymnasts will enter the final phase of their “drive for five” on Saturday as the school plays host to the Wawasee Gymnastics Sectional. The Lady Warriors enter Saturday’s action as the odds-on-favorite to win their fifth consecutive sectional title.

But it won’t be a cakewalk for the Wawasee girls. Senior standout Angela Kistler is still recovering from a sprained ankle she suffered a couple of weeks ago and her availability may be limited. “We’re pretty sure she’s going to go on the (uneven) bars, but the other events are questionable,” said Wawasee coach Tracy Sumpter. dilemma, Sumpter thinks that her team has control of its destiny. The Lady Warriors compiled an impressive 13-1 record during the 1990 season, even winning meets when they weren’t sharp. If they’re sharp on Saturday, Sumpter is confident of victory. “If she (Kistler) was in the allaround, and strong, I’d feel more confident,” Sumpter said. “(But) even without her, there’s enough talent to win the sectional. If we hit our routines, we’ll win.” The Lady Warriors still sport a talented trio of all-around performers in juniors Karen Butt and Barb Signorelli, and senior Diane Karst. Butt’put in a superb performance at last year’s sectional, taking first in the vault, second in the uneven bars and fourth in the floor exercise. Signorelli and Karst saw limited action at last year’s sectional but they will be focal points for the Wawasee attack this time around. Butt, Signorelli and Karst showed similar abilities during the season and all three were almost always in contention for a top three finish in all-around competition. If Wawasee’s squad falters on Saturday, however, there will be plenty of teams ready to take its place. A consolidation of gymnastics sectionals is taking place across the state and the Wawasee Sectional will have 12 teams this year instead of the usual eight. The top two sectional teams will advance to regional action at Valparaiso the following weekend. Additionally, the top six finishers in each event will earn a trip to the regional as individual qualifiers. The Southwood Lady Knights are one of the new teams that could make a splash at the Wawasee Sectional. Southwood compiled a 9-1 record this season while averaging about 92 points per meet. “This is probably one of the best teams we’ve ever had at Southwood,” said Lady Knights coach Jeff Bosler. “We’ve set a lot of school records in individual events.”. Southwood has been led by the all-around efforts of sophomore Michelle Wright and freshman Roni Donaldson. Wright stood out as her team’s top performer during dual meet action, scoring in the 32-33 point range in all around competition.

The vault is where Wright really shines, however. She raised §ome eyebrows as a freshman last, year, when she took 14th place in the event at state. Bosler says he is looking forward to his team's first year at the Wawasee Sectional. In previous years, Southwood was part of the Logansport Sectional, where the Marion dynasty ruled. “We’re excited (about) getting away from Marion because Marion has dominated us tire past 12 years at Logansport,” he said. Elkhart Central, with its solid 6-2 record, will be a team to be reckoned with at the sectional too. The Lady Blue Blazers came within a point of winning last year’s classic showdown.

Wawasee pulled out the title with a strong floor exercise performance and a winning score of 97.50. Central took second with 96.60. When the two rivals met earlier this month at Syracuse, Wawasee emerged with a lopsided 99.45-90.85 victory. But past records don’t count for anything in post-season play, and Central will be shooting for the Lady Warriors. “I definitely think that W’awasee is the favorite and I think Elkhart Central is in that category too.” said East Noble Lady Knight coach Claudette Lear. Lear is another coach who will

be part of the Wawasee Sectional for the first time. East Noble used to host its own sectional before the reorganization occurred. The Lady Knights will be a dark horse contender on Saturday. Coach Lear has only one girl with varsity experience from last, year’s powerhouse squad scored in the upper 90s on a regular basis. This year’s inexperienced team has averaged about 85 points per meet, while compiling a 5-8 record. Lear isn’t complaining about her team’s performance, however. Considering the team’s lack of veterans, she thinks her girls have put in a fine effort in 1990. Junior Renae Workman is the team’s leader in the all-around, averaging in the 29-31 point range. Lear thinks that Workman has the potential to do even better. “Not one meet has she hit all four routines and we hope she can do that in the sectional,” Lear said. of sectional teams will include Wawasee, Elkhart Central, East Noble, Elkhart Memorial, Northfield, Plymouth, Southwood, Warsaw, West Noble, Manchester, Tippecanoe Valley and Lakeland. The action begins at noon on Saturday, with four events being conducted at a time. Lakeland Invitational The Lady Warriors took second place at the Lakeland Invitational last Saturday. Despite the team's high finish, coach Sumpter wasn't particularly pleased with the turn of events. The Lady Warriors had a terrible time on (and off) the balance beam. Sumpter hopes her girls “got it out of their system” and will have better luck at the sectional. Leo finished at the top of the six-team field, taking first with a total of 100.3. Wawasee followed in second at 91.95 and Dekalb scored an 87.45 to grab third. Carroll, Lakeland and Manchester rounded out the field of teams. Barb Signorelli led the Wawasee attack, taking fourth in the all-around with a score of 29.9. Diane Karst was fifth in the vault with an 8.5 and Karen Butt recorded an 8.25 to take fifth in the floor exercise. Signorelli was the top Wawasee performer in the uneven bars, taking fourth with an 8.1.
