Wawasee. struggling to find the basket, trailed 15-6 at the end of the first quarter as the Warriors were able to hit just 3-of-15 from the field in the initial period. The Warriors started the second quarter with a 12-2 run that gave them their first lead at 18-17 when Chris Conkling connected on a jumper midway through the quarter Wawasee led 23-21 before senior guard Chris DeVine hit a trey to give Bremen a 24-23 lead at halftime. Wawasee fell behind 31-23 to start the second half as the Lions scored the first seven points of the period on two baskets bycenter Jon Feldman and a threepoint shot by DeVine. The Warriors responded in the final six minutes of the quarter, going on a 12-4 scoring run that ended with a Jason Mickley three-pointer that knotted the score (35-35) at the end of the stanza. The final quarter saw the Warriors hold a slim lead (one-two points) until the they went cold in the final 1> 2 minutes After taking a 46-45 lead on a free throw by Conkling with 1:30 left, the Warriors were outscored. 6-0. as Bremen posted the 51-46 win. Trent Newcomb gave the hosts the lead at 47-46 with two free throws and then, following a missed shot by Wawasee. Feldman hit a pair of charitytosses with 18 seconds left to make the score 49-46. Wawasee had one last opportunity to tie the contest, but a three-point shot by .Mickley was just off the mark and Jones put the nail in the coffin with a breakaway lay-up for the final margin. “We played hard again but it was the little things that hurt us.”

JV Wins Season Finale The Warrior junior varsity concluded the 1989-90 campaign on a positive note by closing out the season at 10-10 with a 48-44 win over Bremen. The Wawasee JV led 27-26 at halftime before stretching its lead to 37-31 with a strong third quarter effort. The Warriors held on in the final period for the fourpoint win. Sophomore Thanh Tran paced Wawasee with 18 points while freshmen Kyle Newcomer and Mike Ferverda each tossed in 12 points for the winners. Hoosier Hysteria Time With ,the regular season just a fading memory now, the Warriors are back at 0-0 with sectional action looming on the horizon. Wawasee grad competes for Wabash swim team
Brian Neff, a 1989 graduate of Wawasee High School, has helped the Wabash College swim team to a perfect 11-0 dual meet season as a freshman performer for the squad. Neff was a key member of the Wawdsee squad last season, helping the Warriors to a 12-2 regular Reason mark, a third place finish in the sectional and a 13th place performance at the state meet. against host Triton (5-14). The Triton Sectional begins play tonight (Wednesday) when Tippecanoe Valley (17-3) faces Rochester (3-17). Earlier in the season, the Vikings handled the Zebras, 118-87. Barring a major upset in tonight’s sectional opener, the Warriors will square off against Tippy Valley on Friday with hopes of advancing to Saturday evening’s championship contest at 7:30 p.m. versus the winner of the Warsaw-Triton contest. Wawasee faced Tippy Valley on January 13 and lost 74-65. The visiting Vikings, playing without center Chris Dußois and forward Bruce Huffman, jumped to a quick 12-2 lead and controlled the entire contest. Under the direction of coach Bob Dußois (no relation to Chris), Tippecanoe Valley has lost only to Warsaw, Whitko and John Glenn. The Vikings feature a highscoring offense that has five starters averaging in double figures. The outside attack is led by Scott Johnson, Scott Smith and Eric Thompson, while Dußois and Steve Dunnuck post up inside.
Wawasee 400 yard freestyle relay team capture 13th place at the state finals with a school record effort of 3:18.43 This season, for the Little Giants, Neff is on the team’s 200 yard freestyle relay team, which has posted a time of 1:28.51 to rank sixth nationally in Division 111 competition. Neff has also swum on the team's 400 medley relay team throughout the season and is a member of the traveling team. The Wabash swim squad, coached by Gail Pebworth, was ranked eighth in the nation among NCAA Division 111 schools, according to the latest poll. The team has posted a 26-1 mark in dual meets over the past three seasons and just finished competing in the annual Liberal Arts Invitational at DePauw University last weekend. Neff, who served as class valedictorian at Wawasee last year, was named- as one of the members of the first-ever state swimming all-academic team last spring Neff, one of 17 swimmers chosen to the all-academic team, had a 4.15 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, which included a bonus system Neff, who is majoring in premed. received another academic honor in October when he was selected as an Academic AllAmerican by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association. The Wabash freshman was also on the Dean’s List at the Crawfordsville school after the completion of the Fall Semester. Neff, who is also a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity at Wabash, is the son of Mike and Kay Neff of Syracuse.

Swim squad concludes season

"I was very pleased with the way our kids swam," emphasized Roger Karns, 'Wawasee boys' swim coach, after watching five members of the squad compete in the state finals at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis Friday and Saturday. Wawasee finished with nine points to tie for 30th place in the team standings of the state championship event. The Warriors, who finished third in the sectional the previous week, finished ahead of all the other qualifying teams from the Elkhart Sectional. Carmel coasted to the team title with 237 points, easily outdistancing second place Lake Central (158). The remainder of the top 10 teams for the meet included: Columbus North (148), North Central (145), Anderson (143), West Lafayette Harrison (142), Kokomo (99), Munster (94), Muncie Central (76). and South Bend Riley (73). During Friday night's consolation action, senior Casey Kline took 19th in the 50-yard freestyle with a lifetime best time of 22.46. “We were very happy with Casey’s swim, which was even faster than his sectional time," said Karns. Senior Scott Berkey recorded a season best time of 4:53.63 to place 13th in the 500 freestyle event to advance to Saturday's consolation finals. “Berkey also swam a really strong race on Friday,” stated Karns. Junior Aaron Dial, seeded 25th in the 100 backstroke, also made a strong showing, placing 24th in the consolation round. The Warriors' 400 freestyle relay team of Kline, Berkey, Thaddeus Dußois and Todd Miller finished in 23rd place after entering the consolation round as the 23rd seed. “Kline, as well as Berkey, had really good splits during the relay event,” noted Karns. On Saturday, Berkey returned to the consolation finals and captured the event to give the team its' total of nine points for the competition.
“I was happy with the way that the meet went for us and it was as strong as ever.” commented Karns. Looking Towards Next Season With 17 of the 19 swimmers that comprised his 10-5 team this season eligible to return next year. Karns is optimistic after completing his initial season at the helm for the Warriors. “I thought that we had a successful rebuilding year this season, with only four lettermen returning, and we hope to be a

When the final Associated Press Top 20 Indiana high school boys' basketball poll of the 1989-90 season was released earlier this week, it contained some area flavor from the Northern Lakes Conference. Concord, who opened sectional play last night (Tuesday) with a 74-45 win over Goshen, concluded the regular season 20-0 and ranked as the top squad in the state. Following the Minutemen in the final poll of the season were East Chicago Central (19-1), Gary Roosevelt (18-2), Loogootee (20-0), Bedford North Lawrence (20-2), Marion (18-2), Evansville Bosse (18-2), Warsaw (19-2), Gary West (15-2) and New Albany (17-3) in the Top 10.
