While Wawasee led throughout the game, taking advantage of 21 North Wood turnovers, coach Gary Goshert maintained, “It was no cakewalk, it was a good game the whole way. Their kids fought hard and we fought hard.” Tim Lilly and Randy Cesco followed Mickley in scoring with 11 points each while senior Chris Conkling added 10. Lilly also helped the strong defensive effort with seven steals. Center Mike Conrad led the Panthers with 12 points. “We executed pretty well offensively. The backcourt had some nice situations on defense,” Goshert said, referring to three steals by Mickley and four by his co-hort, Matt Haab. two points, 9-7, late in the first quarter, a 7-1 Wawasee run in the final 1:20 of the stanza set the tone for things to come. Frustrated by a press that they couldn’t solve, North Wood fell behind 12 points at the half (36-24) and never got closer. Wawasee’s biggest lead came with 1:13 left in the third quarter when Lilly drove for a lefthanded layup to make it 55-32.

Swimmers take third in conference meet

I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer With favorite Concord taking control of the NLC Meet early, en route to the team championship, Wawasee coach Roger Karns was hoping that his squad would be able to take second in the seventeam field at the Concord Pool during Saturday’s final round of competition. When the day was over, the Warriors found themselves with 196.5 points, good enough for third behind Concord (298.5) and Warsaw (210). “We just weren’t as crisp today as we were on Thursday for the preliminaries and that hurt us," commented Karns. “Warsaw had more people qualified for the finals and with their depth there it was hard for us to try and make up points to overtake them," the coach added. Following Wawasep were Plymouth (179), Goshen (118), North Wood (111) and NorthriHge (36). % The Warriors did have some fine individual efforts during the two-day NLC Meet, as senior Scott Berkey captured the conference crown in the 200-yard freestyle race. He also tied with Concord's Jeremiah Klinger for first in the 500 freestyle. "Berkey had a great day, Todd (Miller) performed well in the 100 butterfly, Andy (Dunithan) did a nice job in diving and the 50 freestyle swimmers (Casey Kline and Thaddeus Dußois) also swam pretty well," commented Karns.

The doubles event winners were Kathy Dean and Pam Blosser, with a handicap score of 1,075, and Monica Lambright and Betty Swihart, with a scratch score of 1,034.
