Wawasee Lady Warriors split at sectional
I By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer The Warsaw Sectional provided the best of times and the worst of times for the Wawasee Lady Warriors basketball team. It was the best of times when Wawasee’s squad upset Triton, 47-40, in first-round action last Thursday. It was the worst of times when it dropped an 81-31 decision to top ranked Warsaw in the title game Saturday. Warsaw’s 20-0 Lady Tigers dominated every phase of the game, en route to their fourth straight sectional title. Sam Snyder, a 6-foot-2 center, led the Warsaw scoring attack with 17

points. But it was senior Angie Johnson who set the pace for the game, scoring 14 points, handling the ball and playing tenacious defense. Wawasee coach jfti Hite had a lot to be pleased about, despite the lopsided loss. His girls opened some eyes with their victory over Triton and they played Warsaw a lot tougher than they did during the Northern Lakes Conference season. Back on January 4, Wawasee dropped an 88-13 decision to the Lady Tigers at Warsaw. It was 46-0 before the Lady Warriors even scored in that game. They looked a lot better last Saturday, however. Wawasee even had an early 5-4 lead after

Kristine Gibson tossed in a threepoint basket. “Coach Hite has got to be pleased with the way they played,” said Warsaw coach Will Wienhorst. “(From) when we played them on January 4, they’ve improved an awful lot.” “Overall, I’d have to say the kids played hard and played well against a team that was so much taller than they were,” Hite added. After a sluggish start, the Lady Tigers used their size and speed to build a 24-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. They continued to roll in the second quarter and enjoyed a 51-18 halftime advantage. For all practical purposes, the game was over by the half. But Wawasee’s squad kept scrapping throughout the contest. Seniors Kriss Eisenhour and Kristine Gibson led the Lady Warriors with nine points each. Getting to the sectional title game was a good experience for Wawasee’s hoopsters. But Hite emphasizes that the girls weren’t just there for the experience of it. “It wasn’t just a thing of being glad to be there,” Hite said. “They wanted to win it. They came towin,” But it was the Lady Tigers who came away with the win and it will be the Lady Tigers who advance to Saturday’s Warsaw Regional. In addition to Warsaw, the field will include teams from Columbia City, Prairie Heights and Culver Academy. Victory Over Triton The Lady Warriors knew they would have their hands full in their matchup against Triton. The Lady Trojans featured a fine freshman point guard by the name of Justina Reichert, along with big front line players like Sharon Patterson (5-foot-ll), Katrina Klotz (5-9) and Terri Bates (5-10). To make matters worse, Wawasee lost the services of standout guard Lisa Mikel at 5:11 of the first quarter when she went down with an ankle injury. The Lady Warriors could have folded their tents right then, but they battled tooth-and-nail and controlled the game’s tempo, en route to the victory. It took a team effort to compensate for the loss of Mikel, and

Hite utilized his bench throughout the contest. Kristine Gibson, Kerri Speicher and Sara Wilkinson helped pick up the slack in the ball handling department. “I have a lot of confidence in everybody I put in there,” Hite said. Wilkinson, a senior, led the Wawasee scoring effort, with her driving baskets and long-range bombs. She scored a game-high 12 points, with six of those coming on three-point shots. Seniors Kriss Eisenhour and Kristine Gibson helped the cause with eight and six points, respectively. Lori Stiver, Paige Price and Lori Gargett all contributed to the well-balanced offensive attack with five points apiece. Reichert scored 11 points to lead the Triton offense. She was complemented by Patterson, who chipped in with 10 points. Wawasee’s hustling zone defense negated the big size advantage of the Trojans. The Lady Warrior defenders didn’t let their opponents have easy shots and they didn’t let them crash the offensive boards, either. “We knew where they were coming,” Hite said.“We anticipated, and beat them to the spot and they had to go around us.” Triton came into the sectional with a record of 9-9, while Wawasee had a 3-15 mark. The disparity in records certainly didn’t show on the court, as the two teams seemed evenly matched. Early game jitters were evident on the offensive end for both teams. With about 2>£ minutes left in the first quarter, Wawasee had a lead (2-1) that looked more like a baseball score. The pace picked up, however, and Wawasee jumped out to a 12-6 lead at 5:17 of the second quarter. Wilkinson led the Lady Warrior spurt, scoring eight points on two three-point bombs and a driving jumper. Wawasee increased its lead to 17-10 when Price knocked down a free throw at the 2:23 mark of the quarter. But Justina Reichert led a Triton comeback in the waning moments of the half that pulled 1 ' < the Lady Trojans to within one (19-18). Triton scored the first six joints of the second half to take a

five point lead, and it was Wawasee’s turn to come from behind. Eisenhour’s 14-foot tur- ' naround jumper gave Wawasee a 30-29 lead at 2:11 of the third quarter, but Triton came back to grab a 34-32 lead at the end of the stanza. It was a nip-and-tuck battle through most of the fourth quarter before Gibson and Eisenhour combined to give the Lady Warriors some breathing room. Gibson nailed a threepointer to give Wawasee a 40-36 lead with 4:16 left. Triton’s Sharon Patterson made it 40-38 on a rebound basket, but Gibson countered by dribbling the length of the floor and canning a 10-foot bank shot. Then the 5-foot-8 Eisenhour took over, scoring on a baseline post move and adding a free throw, to make the score 45-38 with just 1:57 left. The game was in the bag at that point and it was just a matter of time before the underdog Lady Warriors would savor the sweet victory. Throughout the season, coach Hite claimed he had a much better team than last year’s 1-18 squad. The team’s victory total didn’t increase by a lot, but Hite said his girls were a more competitive team this time around. He won’t get any argument from the Triton Lady Trojans, a team that was better than Wawasee on paper, but not between the end lines.
