After 100 years, Zion Chapel closes; merges with Goshen Church

By STACEY LESCH Staff Writer

Being a small, country church it has had its difficulties in growing. At one point, there was question as to whether or not it could remain open ... — Taken from a 1981 news article appearing in the The Mail-Journal. Though difficult at times, the . Zion Chapel United Brethren Church managed to surpass its 100 year mark in 1989. The centennial was a special celebration for the church as it symbolized triumph over what many thought would be a church’s failed attempt. In fact, the church did find success through the years, but as the start of a new decade was welcomed, the Zion Chapel closed its doors.

The story of Fatima —

The children are jailed

(EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is part three of a series of articles explaining the story of Our Lady of Fatima and her appearance to three children in Portugal.) The apparitions rapidly were creating so much excitement that the atheistic civil authorities became alarmed. At the next scheduled appearance of the Lady, August 13, 1938, though more than 15,000 people were waiting in the Cova, the atheistic mayor of Ourem, under whose jurisdiction Fatima belonged, had the children kidnapped and placed in jail. In spite of his threats to have them burnt alive in boiling oil, the children refused to reveal the secret given to them. Fearing violence from the people, the mayor released Lucy and her cousins the next day. Near the village of Valinhos on August 19th, the Lady appeared to the children again. She told

Located at the corner of CR 1000 N and the Syracuse-Webster Road in Syracuse, the small, white house of worship still remains, but the congregation will no longer be entering the now darkened sanctuary. Instead, they will have the opportunity to follow the church, as it merges with the Clearview United Brethren Church of Goshen. Although not yet officially named, the two congregations may be worshiping under one church, the Clearview Chapel. History of Zion Zion Chapel was built in 1889 as an off shoot of the Union United Brethren Church located onequarter mile east of Zion Chapel. The church reached its peak in membership during 1965 and 1966 with 56 members. More recently, between 25 and 30 members frequented the Zion church, causing

them she was greatly displeased by the action of the mayor. As a result, the miracle promised for October would not be as impressive as originally planned. More than 30,000 people were present in September, and saw a shower of mysterious white petals fall to within 10 feet of the ground before dissolving into the air. Many also saw the globe of light bearing the Lady come to rest atop the tree, and the branches bend as though someone were standing on them. Later, they saw the cloud depart into the east, from whence it had come. By now, all Portugal was stirred by the events taking place at Fatima, suddenly the most important spot in the land. Particularly were the newspapers interested, especially in the statement that a great miracle was to take place. Many reporters and photographers were on hand to record the events, or to prove that the statements were nothing

the church to vacate the area, and merge with another congregation. Rev. Hubert Schmucker, last pastor at Zion and presently the full-time pastor at the merged church, says the small Zion congregation could not stand alone, so for the benefit of the church, Zion merged with the Goshen Clearview United Brethren Church. The Clearview Church, also small in size, has been worshiping at the Bethany Christian High School in Goshen, until a permanent domain is established. The ground where the new church will be erected is located just south of Fairfield High School on US 33. To be built on 11 acres, Rev. Schmucker says the location was chosen for its proximity to Goshen and the Lakeland area. Rev. Schmucker grew up in

more than lies. On the days preceding October 13th, all roads led to Fatima, with people coming from all parts of the land in any form of transportation they could find. Many walked for miles over the rough fields. It rained all the night of the 12th and the morning of the 13th. By noon, more than 70,000 had crowded into the Cova. Standing in mud up to their ankles, they huddled together under umbrellas, seeking protection from the relentless rain as they prayed their rosaries. Shortly after noon the Lady arrived for her final appearance. She told the children: “I am the Lady of the Rosary. I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and to ask pardon for their sins. They must not offend Our Lord any more, for He is already too grievously offended by the sins of men. People must say the Rosary. Let them continue saying it every day.”
