10 YEARS AGO, JAN. 30,1980 A one-pound, three-ounce yellow perch caught in Lake Wawasee last year made Robert' Menefee of Fort Wayne one of 15 winners in the 1979 Fish of the Year contest. The contest was sponsored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Mrs. Olive Bushong of Syracuse was presented the gold 50-Year Award of the Order of the Eastern Start by past Grand Matron Suzanne Lisor at a ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 20, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Bushong. Applications are available in the Wawasee High School Guidance Office for the Youth Conservation Corps. The program offers youth summer employment in the outdoor atmosphere of the national forests, national parks, state parks, and other public land and water areas of the nation. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Enoch have returned to their home of r 2, Syracuse, from a five-week vacation. They visited their son. Dr. J.P. Peterson and family in Salt Lake City over the holidays and attended the Miami and Atlanta gift and furniture shows. Lorraine Meek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Meek, Syracuse, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester. 1979-80 at Fort Wayne Bible College, Fort Wayne. 20 YEARS AGO. JAN. 28, 1970 Mr. and Mrs. H.D. McClintic of Portage, Mich., spent Sunday with Mrs. Lydia Deardorff and daughter, Ida, at Syracuse. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Harting and children of Syracuse were recent visitors in the home of Mrs. Lois Harper at Cromwell. Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Treat, South Bend, and Ralph Smultz, Indianapolis. were in Syracuse on business Tuesday morning. Bill Pipp, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Pipp of Syracuse, a freshman at Indiana University,' is spending the betweensemesters vacation at home. Mr. and Mrs. James G. Purvis. Lake Wawasee. have returned from a 10-day vacation trip to San Antonio, Texas, where they visited Mrs. Purvis’ sister and family, Chaplain (Lt. Col) and Mrs. E.J. Beekley, at Lackland AFB. Mrs. Dean Pittman of Syracuse entertained the . Wednesday Afternoon Club on Jan. 21 Mrs. Ray D. Jones presided with the Business meeting in regular form. The 1970-71 program committee appointed by Mrs. Jones is as follows: Mrs. Ernest Bushong. Mrs. George Kleopfer. Mrs. Louis Kuilema and Mrs. John Sudlow. S-5 Robert Penick spent the weekend with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Penick, Syracuse. A family dinner was held Sunday honoring his 21st birthday. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Read. Butler; Mrs. Thelma Read. Albion; and Mrs. and Mrs. Larry Read. Pierceton. 30 YEARS AGO, JAN. 28, 1960 Mr and Mrs. John R. Kern and daughter, Debbie, of Auburn, visited Friday in the homes of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Kern Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. Orval Snobarger. Foo and Faye Wong entertained their employees and families Monday evening with a skating party at Hoosier Skateland. An annual party following the holiday season, more than 40 people enjoyed the evening of skating and light refreshments. W.M. Hill graduates from Lackland Airman William M. Hill has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations. In addition, airrtien who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the community college of the Air Force Hill is the son of James S. and Laura Jo. Hill of r 1, North Webster and is a graduate of Wawasee High School.
