Warrior eagers struggling, losing streak reaches five
By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer
Despite the fact that the squad has been playing strong defense, a stagnant offense, combined with crucial mistakes at key times, have been the key factors in dropping the Wawasee boys’ basketball team to 4-10 after losses to Goshen and Westview last weekend. “The little things are hurting us right now and we’re going to have to go back to the basics and start reducing our mistakes or things won’t get any better,” said a frustrated coach Gary Goshert after Saturday’s 74-53 loss at Westview. Wawasee, coming off a 34-32 overtime loss to Goshen the previous evening, fell behind 14-6 late in the first quarter against a talented Westview squad and never could catch up. After cutting the Westview lead to 18-16 early in the second quarter, the hosts went on a 19-7 run to lead Wawasee, 37-23, at halftime. “You just can’t make silly mistakes against a good club like Westview and we had some crucial situations where we turned the ball over and sent them to the free throw line with bad fouls,” commented Goshert. Behind the strong play of seniors Ryan Yoder (28 points) and Jeremy Bachman (18 points), the 15-1 Westview Warriors kept their lead at 10 points or more throughout the third quarter and led 53-42 at the end of the period. “I thought that we picked up the intensity in the third quarter and I also thought that our depth helped us wear them down with the press and the running game,” said Gerald Eash, Westview head coach. . Wawasee got within 10 points on several occasions in the final quarter but the hosts, sparked by a technical on Eash midway through the stanza, went on a 11-2 run to wrap up the win, 74-53. “Wawasee always plays hard but I thought that Bachman played hard for us and Yoder had a good game as well,” said Eash. Overtime Loss To Goshen For a basketball game that had the excitement level of a chess match for the first three quarters, Wawasee’s 34-32 overtime loss to Goshen on Friday turned into quite an exciting contest before it was all over. The host Warriors trailed 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and 14-6 at halftime, with the Redskins content to run plenty of time off the clock on each possession. “I can’t be more satisfied with our defense because we contained their top players (Matt Grieser and Mitch

Calling it one of his team’s ' “better all-around games of the season,” coach Chuck Evans watched the Wawasee boys’ freshman basketball team up its season mark to 11-3 with a 43-41 win over Northridge on Monday. The visiting Raiders came out strong, grabbing a quick 9-0 lead on the strength of a trio of three point baskets. The Warriors recovered from the initial onslaught to cut the lead to 11-10 at the end of the first quarter before going on a 12-3 run in the second stanza to take a 22-14 advantage at halftime. “We responded well against a good team after losing to Goshen last week,” said Evans. “I

Milford Girls’ Action The Milford eighth grade girls’ team saw its season mark fall to 2-5 after a 41-16 loss to Wakarusa in action on January 18. Hostetter beat Warsaw’s Jason Finch 7-2 in the second round before dropping a heart-breaking 7-6 decision to Goshen’s Scott Moon in the final. Chris Requejo, Brian Dutcher, Rick Weaver and Buster Clevenger recorded third-place finishes,in the 103-, 119-, 130- and 145-pound weight classes, respectively, for the Warriors. Sectional action is next on the schedule for Wawasee’s grapplers. The team will head to Kendallville Saturday to defend its title at the East Noble Sectional. East Noble’s Knights look like the team to beat, having compiled an 11-1 record this season and winning the Northeast Hoosier Conference. It was the first wrestling conference title for East Noble in 28 years.
lead at 25-23 when Tim Lilly converted a three point play after scoring off of a Goshen turnover. “Our young kids played like young kids tonight and we lost the lead due to inexperience, but give Wawasee some credit for the trouble we had,” commented Goshen Coach Mike Sorrell. Goshen knotted the score at 25-25 as Herschberger canned two free throws with 1:37 left in the game. Both teams had opportunities in the final minute of the game to win but neither were successful and the game went into overtime, still tied at 25-25. After Haab again tied the game, 27-27, with a driving field goal, Goshen assumed control, taking a 34-29 lead with seven free throws down the stretch. A three point shot by Chris Conkling at the buzzer cut the final margin to 34-32, giving the Redskins their eighth win against four losses. “We’ve struggled on offense for the past few weeks and it seems like we’re snakebitten because we had the shots and didn’t hit them,” commented Goshert. “I’m proud of the effort, but we have to just relax and go to it on the offensive end." JV Loss To Redskins The Wawasee JV squad stayed close for three quarters before Goshen outscored the hosts, 17-5, in the final period to notch a 46-29 win Friday. thought that the first half was probably one of our better halves of the entire season.” The Warriors came out slow in the third quarter, a trademark of the team throughout the season, and fell behind, 35-34, at the end of the quarter. The fourth quarter saw the contest close throughout, with neither team able to apply the knockout punch. With the score tied at 41-41 with just 15 seconds left in the game, Northridge missed a free throw and the Warriors quickly took a 43-41 lead as Mike Garland nailed a short shot off of a pass from Matt Wilkinson. A desperation shot by the Raiders missed its mark at the buzzer and the Warriors had the victory. Mike Ferverda paced the Warrior offense with 17 points while Garland netted eight and Wilkinson scored six.
while Brandy Kozon added eight caroms. The eighth grade squad slipped to 2-4 on the season after a 29-24 loss to Mentone January 17. Dippon popped in 10 points to lead the squad while Cruz netted five. Cruz again led the team in rebounding with nine caroms while teammate Teresa Crabtree grabbed five. The Milford seventh grade girls’ team posted a 20-16 win over Wakarusa in action on January 18 as Shelly Kidd and Lisa Charlton led the Lady Trojans with six points each. Renee Wuthrich, Jamie Pressler, Kara Singrey and Jenny Sorenson also scored for the squad while Singrey led the team with five steals.
“Based on what I’ve seen of East Noble, they’re really strong and have more depth than we do,” said Wawasee coach Dave VanLue. “But we re sure going to give them a run for their money. I expect my seniors to come through.” Other teams in the sectional include West Noble, Central Noble and Westview. It looks like it will be a two-team race for the title, however. After finishing the season at 6-8-1, VanLue says his team will need to have one of its best performances to beat the Knights. points. Freshman Jake Lambert added seven points while Joel Hadley came off the bench to net six points. Two More Tough Opponents This Weekend With a losing streak that has now reached five games, the search for a victory doesn’t get any easier this weekend as the Warriors face Whitko and East Noble, two teams that have combined for an overall record of 21-3. The Warriors trek to South Whitley on Friday evening for a 6:15 p.m. (JV tip-off) contest against the Wildcats (10-2 before a game tonight with Fort Wayne North Side). Whitko’s only setbacks on the season have been to Northfield and Warsaw, two teams ranked in the state’s top 20 throughout the season. The Wildcats feature a talented line-up that includes seven veterans from the 20-4 regional runner-up team of last season. Key players for Whitko include seniors Chad Patrick, Todd Darley and Scott Adams, as well as 6-3 junior Steve Nicodemus. Wawasee returns home Saturday for a visit from East Noble (11-1 before Friday’s game against Norwell). The Knights, 21-3 last season, are led by the one-two punch of 5-10 senior Chris Keil and 6-4 senior Ben Vanßyn. Action begins with the JV contest at 6:15 p.m.
Fall To Goshen Facing a style different from anything they had seen this season, the Warriors dropped a 25-13 decision at Goshen last Thursday to fall to 10-3 on the season. “It was one of the most frustrating games of the season and even though we didn't play that bad, their slowdown style got the best of us,” commented Evans. After leading 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Warriors were outscored 25-10 the rest of the way as the host Redskins packed their defense inside and forced the outside shots. “We shot poorly from the outside and we were only getting one shot, as well," said Evans. The big difference in the game was that Goshen attempted 25 free throws while Wawasee shot just two. Wilkinson led the offense with six points while Spencer Long (three) and Ferverda and Garland (two each) rounded out the scoring for the Warriors. Season Nearing Conclusion The freshman squad now has just three regular season contests left before the NLC Tournament begins February 8. The Warriors will play at East Noble tomorrow (Thursday) before hosting Plymouth next Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. Wawasee will finish the regular season with a game at Warsaw next Thursday, beginning at 4:30 p.m. In the first round of the NLC Tournament, Wawasee will host Concord at 6 p.m. February 8, with a chance to avenge an earlier defeat this season to the .Minutemen. The winner of the Wawasee-Concord clash will face Warsaw February 10. “We have a lot of big challenges ahead of us, with the three tough games left and then the rematch with Concord, which I guarantee we’ll be ready for,” remarked Evans.

Swim squad falls to 9-4 after close loss

The difference between victory and defeat in a sporting event can sometimes be by a very slim margin and the Wawasee boys’ swim squad was on the wrong end of that margin last night (Tuesday), dropping an 88-83 decision to Plymouth. The loss left the Warriors at 9-4 overall and 2-2 in the NLC. “We knew it would be a tough meet and we thought that it would come down to the final event (400 yard freestyle relay), just like it did,” remarked coach Roger Karns after the loss. The Warriors led early in the meet, then fell behind, only to grab the lead again at 64-61 with three races left. Wawasee led, 79-78, heading into the 400 freestyle relay, the final race of the evening, but the Pilgrims responded by capturing first and third to come away with the victory. “We didn’t swim that outstan-

ding the whole night, but Plymouth is really up this season and there were so many close finishes in the meet that one place higher here or there would have made the difference,” commented Karns. Looking for silver linings after a tough loss. Karns cited the efforts of Chris Ganshorn (breaststroke), Aaron Dial (backstroke) and the 200 medley relay team of Dial, Ganshorn, Todd Miller and Cory Manning. Leading the effort for the Warriors, who had four first place finishes, was Scott Berkey, who captured the 200 as well as the 500-yard freestyle events. Also winning for Wawasee were Dial (100 backstroke) and the team of Dial, Ganshorn, Miller and Manning in the 200 medley relay. The Warriors will finish the regular season in the next week, traveling to Bremen tomorrow (Thursday) before hosting Warsaw in a NLC battle next Tuesday evening in the Warrior Pool. Both of the meets are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. The squad will then take a week off from com-
petition before competing in the NLC Meet on Thursday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 10. Defeat Elkhart Memorial The Warriors improved to 9-3 on the season after posting an easy 109-63 win at Elkhart Memorial Monday in nonconference action. Wawasee took firsts in 10 of the 11 events on the night. Eric Schaekel led the way with wins in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events. The Warriors also had individual victories from Miller (200 IM), Thaddeus Dußois (50 freestyle), Berkey (100 butterfly), Casey Kline (100 freestyle), Dial (100 backstroke) and Ganshorn (100 breaststroke). The medley relay team of Berkey, Ganshorn, Kline and Dußois and freestyle relay team of Dial, Schaekel, Dußois and Miller also placed first. Fall To Concord Facing the “cream of the crop” in the NLC this season, according to Karns, the Warriors dropped a 100-72 decision to Concord in conference action in the Warrior Pool last Thursday. Berkey led the Wawasee effort with victories in the 200 and 500 freestyle races while the squad also had wins from Kline (50 freestyle), Andy Dunithan (diving) and Dial (100 backstroke).
