Lady Warriors slip to 3-11

I By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer The Wawasee Lady Warriors had one chance to win last Saturday’s game against visiting Elkhart Memorial. They needed to keep Pat Jackson, the Lady Chargers’ six-foot-one center, on the bench and out of the game. Wawasee’s girls were able to accomplish that goal part of the time as foul trouble forced Jackson to spend a great deal of time on the pine. But she was able to play long enough to guide Memorial to a tough 48-43 victory at Syracuse. Jackson scored 15 points, grabbed several rebounds, and helped ignite the Lady Chargers fast break with her quick outlet passes. “She certainly made a difference for their team because of the way she cleared the boards and (made) outlet passes,” said Lady Warriors’ coach Jim Hite. The game was a nip-and-tuck battle, with Wawasee holding a 33-32 lead at the end of the third quarter. But the Lady Chargers put on a late fourth-quarter surge to clinch the game. The loss dropped Wawasee to 3-11 on the season. Senior Kriss Eisenhour led Wawasee with a 15-point performance of her own. She was complemented by teammate Kristine Gibson, who came through with a career-high 11 points. Paige Price rounded out the Wawasee trio of top scorers by knocking in seven points. Loss To Lady Vikings In a physical game that had the opposing coach complaining, Wawasee’s squad lost a 54-36 verdict to the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings at Syracuse last Thursday, Jan. 11. Valley coach Duane Burkhart complained to referees about the rough play on several occasions. He even had an on-court verbal confrontation with a referee after one his girls was hurt on a lay-up

play. Wawasee coach Jim Hite said the Lady Warriors are a physical team but they aren't out to hurt anybody. ”1 don’t particularly think of it (Wawasee) as a hacking team,” he said. Hite said his squad does play a hard-nosed game, however. They like to put pressure on the ball and sometimes fouls result from their defensive press. “That’s the way our team plays,” he said. “We are a physical team and we run up and down the floor.” When the two teams weren’t fouling each other, they engaged in a fast-paced game that suited the Lady Vikings. She won the uneven bars and balance beam events easily, with scores of 8.4 and 7.8, respectively. Things were a little tighter in the remaining events, as Kistler edged teammate Karen Butt, 8.55-8.5, in the vault and 8.25-8.05 in the floor exercise. Wawasee’s . Lady Warriors dominated the meet, taking the top three spots in every event. opponents stayed undefeated too, as the Lady Warriors lost to North Wood, 51-28, last-Thursday and to Columbia City, 31-18, Monday. Wawasee dropped to 4-5 after the losses while North Wood and Columbia City improved to 10-0 and 14-0, respectively. Debbie Black scored 11 points to lead Wawasee in Thursday’s game. She was complemented by teammate Tammy Clark, who knocked4n 10 points. Gina Minton paced the Lady Warriors on Monday, scoring eight points. Brandi Bray scored four points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Warrior coach Tracy Sumpter said her team didn’t have a good overall performance. She said her girls had a great day in the vaulting competition but did "horrible” on the balance beam. The team still has some improvements to make before it hits its stride. In junior varsity action, Wawasee notched a 71.4 win over West Noble. Nikki Marsh took first on the beam (5.9) and the uneven bars (6.1), while teammate Sarah Lehman was tops in the vault (7.55) and the floor exercise (5.9). Swimmers notch conference win over North Wood, 106-63

I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer “I thought that we came out strong and performed well, overall, throughout the meet,” said coach Roger Karns after watching his squad splash past visiting North Wood, 106-63, in Northern Lakes Conference swimming action last night (Tuesday). The win improved the Warriors’ season mark to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Warriors, who captured firsts in 10 of 11 events, started quickly with a commanding 31-15 lead after the first three events to cruise to the win. Karns, who just last season was leading the Panthers’ program at North Wood, said that it was nice to look so effective against his former team. '“The meet could have been a lot closer if we wouldn’t have come out strong and if their team would have been at full strength,” commented Karns, acknowledging that some of the Panther performers were ill. Senior Scott Berkey led the way for Wawasee, with victories in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle races. He also swam a leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay team. Other Warriors taking firsts were: Todd Miller (200 IM and 100 butterfly), Casey Kline (50 freestyle), Andy Dunithan (diving), Thaddeus Dußois (100 freestyle), Aaron Dial (100 backstroke), the 200 medley relay team of Dial, Kline, Eric Schaekel and Chris Ganshorn, and the 400 freestyle relay four-

The Warriors will continue with NLC action tomorrow (Thursday) with a home contest against Concord. “We’re going to have to come out aggressive, be on top with our performances and make no mistakes because Concord is the top team in the NLC this year,” said Karns. Wawasee will take a break from NLC action with a meet at Elkhart Memorial on Monday before hosting conference opponent Plymouth next Tuesday. Defeat Goshen, 107-65 The Warriors registered a 107-65 victory over Goshen in their first conference meet of the year last Thursday evening on the road. —We swam well and had a large number of personal bests, which is always good,” said Karns after watching his squad win eight of the 11 events for the win.
