Lions, wives work in Guatemalan church

I ByJERI SEELY Editor (Continued from last week) Many think it’s amazing how people can volunteer their time to help others. The entire project is done by volunteers who — except for the gas money to drive the ambulances from Indiana to Guatemala and some meals now furnished by Lions Clubs across the country, who want to help, and in Guatemala where they want to say thank you — pay their own way. The major expense is, of course, food and lodging and the cost of airplane tickets. Most of us even travel with a well supplied sack of candy and balloons to share with the children. They love to receive these special treats and we love to hand them out. Some, like teen-agers Katie and David Sloan, make toys for the Guatemalan orphan children. of Past District Governor and Mrs. James Ross of Indianapolis, made 200 toys for last year’s trip to Guatemala. This summer they made an additional 200 toys and

THE CHURCH — Members of the Indiana Lions conducted an eye clinic in the Catholic Church of Santiago Atitlan during the early part of December. The church was built in the mid-1500s and is now staffed by the Catholic Church of Oklahoma. Built high on a hill 10 blocks from the shores of Lake Atitlan, the church overlooks the happenings in the village below. A center of village activities, many projects were underway in the church while the Lions were there. A daycare center, complete with fenced-in playground, occupies a number of rooms. Men were busy in a woodworking shop in another area and women were busy typing in another area. (Photo by Jeri Seely)

the Rosses rewarded them by taking them to Guatemala so they could help pass out the toys. Jim and Norma Ross can not contain their pride when they talk about these two special teenagers who have given up a lot of their spare time during the past two summers to make toys for the enjoyment of youngsters they did not know and did not at the time expect to ever meet. It instills in many of us the fact that there are many good teen-agers in this world who are not seeking drugs and thrills. Ross served as mechanic on the trip down and delivered an ambulance, clothing and other items to one of the Guatemalan towns. Last year he took a fire truck to this same town. The Sunday before this reporter left for Guatemala City our minister, Chris Mahan of the Christian Church of Milford, included the following verse in his sermon: “But if any one has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God s love abide in him?” I John 3:l7'ftSV

HELPING OTHERS — The Lions of Indiana set up an eye clinic in the old church and with the help of Dr. Baxter F. McLendon of the International Eye Foundation eye exams were given and eyeglasses were distributed. Past District Governor Alfonsa Barahona of Guatemala City, who has worked with the Indiana Lions for the past several years, is shown on the right of the table as he fits a pair of eyeglasses donated by First Lady Barbara Bush on a Myan Indian woman. To the far right, behind Barahona, is Virginia Huffman of Leesburg. Virginia helped in the picking and fitting of the eyeglasses. (Photo by Jeri Seely)

As I watched the Lions at work with the Indian people of Santiago Atitlan, we saw them living up to this passage many times. Past District Governor Joe MarcheggianAvas filled with emotion as he showfed me the handiwork a young Indian girl had given him as a thank you. Marcheggiani ended up fitting eyeglasses on people and had helped the youngster, going above and beyond. On the previous day, the young girl had been brought to the clinic for glasses. There was no prescription to match her’s. The optometrist we were working with took a pair of eyeglasses that had one correct lense and took the other lense out. He told the youngster’s mother that the next time she was in Guatemala City she should purchase the second lense for her daughter. It would cost approximately 40 quetzels (Guatemalan dollars). While this is better that the SIOO that an eye exam and eyeglasses would cost, it is still beyond reach of most families who make around SIOO per year. Marcheggiani, knowing this, gave the mother the 40 quetzels for the purchase of the lense. The next day the youngster returned with her thank you. Dr. McLendon Also working with us this year was Dr. Baxter McLendon, a native of South Carolina who is

with the International Eye Foundation. Dr. McLendon explained that* the IEF is a humanitarian organization stationed in Bethezda, Md. The 25-year-old organization sends optomologists to developing countries. McLendon is currently working in Guatemala, having previously worked in Africa and in the Caribbean. He lives in Guatemala City with his wife and three young daughters. The oldest of the three, Lucia, accompanied her father to Santiago Atitlan and proved to be a big help to all of us. He explained that IEF works with the prevention of blindness and restoration of vision, often hand in hand with the Lions. The people of the developing countries, such as Guatemala, have all of the eye problems that are seen in North America. In addition, there are problems unique to tropical countries, including River Blindness and Vitamin A deficiency which can lead to blindness in children. IEF, McLendon stated, is a small organization with eight people in the home office and the rest of the staff in Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean. While he was home for the summer, he checked oh getting a vehicle to help with the work in Guatemala. A friend suggested he call Jim Cameron, the Indiana

Lion who leads the annual mission to Guatemala. He made the call and was told the Lions of Indiana should be able to find him a vehicle. “Here we all are,” he concluded. The van, driven to Central America for the IEF project, will be used by the doctor in the distribution of medication in the work with River Blindness. “Community education will be necessary,” he said. “Grass roots participation is away to help the people.” Upon returning home, mission leader Jim Cameron of Urbana said, “We have just returned froin a very successful mission by the Lions of Indiana to Guatemala. Fifteen ambulances and one van (donated to the International Eye Foundation for their work in Vitamin “A” and River Blindness Project in Guatemala) were delivered. The 15 ambulances went to various Lions clubs and future Lions clubs to be used by the cities that they are in. We also dispensed used eyeglasses and left 12,000 pair to be dispensed by two Lions clinics. “A total of 59 Lions and ladies were involved from Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Texas and Sweden. I thank every Lion, lady, Lioness, Leo, and all of the clubs that donated to this project. It could not be done without your help. I know the people of Guatemala thank you, too.”
