Hfawasee board approves annual trip to Washington for students

Allowing more time in the January meeting for a facility report presentation, a number of reports and presentations were moved to last night's meeting of the Wawasee Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees, causing the meeting to last longer than normal. Perhaps the major topic of discussion was the request for “a second trip to Washington. D C., this school year. ticular trip. Corson cannot make the trip during spring break due to prior commitment. Curtis Jordan, board president, who normally casts his votes on issues, chose not to vote, as he was not sure of the policy regarding such a matter. This trip will allow those who had schedule conflicts the opportunity of experiencing Washington. D C., and contain . the same organization and features of the fall break trip. « Approval was also given by the board to establish the Washington. D C., field trip as an annual event and to occur over fall vacation beginning with the 1990 school year Bids/Appropriation Lochmandy Motors. Elkhart, was awarded the bid on a 1990 Dodge. 360 V-8 engine, three-

fourth ton four-by-four pick-up truck and snow blade. Lochmandy was one of three dealers submitting bids Monday on the truck. The price for the vehicle, snow blade and rear tow hooks is $17,695. Other bids were received from Eby Ford. Goshen, a 1990 Ford. $18,032; and Kerlin Motors, a 1990 Ford. $18,810.88. Additional appropriations in the amount of $250,000 was approved by the board last evening, during a public hearing on the matter. The money will be used to purchase the Kern property, pay for architectural fees for reroofing part of the Milford School, and the reroofing project itself. regarding the drug education in the school corporation. She noted that most of the goals she established this past summer will be completed by the end of the school year. Board's approval for Fox to seek a waiver on the licensing requirement and class time requirement for the Substance Abuse Outreach Assistance Program was given. The waiver will be sought from the Indiana Department of Education. This is the second time the waiver has been sought. Other reports included one from Art Marose regarding property and liability insurance coverages. Board members approved a six percent package for classified staff salary and benefits as presented by Roger Kryder.

Also approved was the leave of absence request by Charlotte A. Jessie, as fourth grade teacher at North Webster from January’ 15-June 1. for maternity leave. Board members approved the employment of Allene Dewart to replace Mrs. Machan in health services; Vicki Stoll on a temporary contract to speech at the high school during the second semester, Kathy Garrett as attendance secretary and secretary to the dean of students at Wawasee, and Theresa Kern as bus driver for route 25. Roger Kryder, business manager, made board members aware of the transfer request by Martha S. Yeager from her position as gifted/talented coordinator to the third grade at Syracuse school, replacing Sara Kroh who is retiring. Also during the meeting Jordan presented retirement plaques to Mrs. Kroh who is retiring after 19.5 years with the school corporation and to Leßoy Rapp after 36 years of teaching, 17 with the school corporation. Approval was given to appoint Hal Traviolia, athletic director, to serve on the Syracuse Park Board for one tenn. GED certificates were approved by the board for Gisela Vore. W'illiam Scarbeary. Trisha Thornburg and Robert Weldy. The next regular meeting of the board will be Tuesday. Jan. 9. at 7 p.m.

SWADCO shows interest in purchasing Memorial Park

.Positioning itself for a possible purchase of Memorial Park (Vega Field) for industrial use. the Syracuse-Wawasee Area Development Company met with Wawasee School Corporation officials last Wednesday in Syracuse. School Superintendent Dr. Roger Thornton; Roger Kryder. business manager; and Henry Smith, assistant superintendent for instruction, met with SWADCO members to discuss a potential transaction. Dick Conroy, SWADCO president, noted that the purchase would likely be unable to take place until next summer. "In the meantime, if there is something we could tell interested companies, it would be helpful." he said

Winter Carnival January 27-28, activities to conform to weather

Acknowledging the success of the merchant-sponsored children’s movies and Santa Claus’ arrival December 2. the Syracuse Retail Merchants organization turned its attention toward the Winter Carnival, scheduled for January 27-28. Meeting at the Creative Touch Studio last Friday, the merchants were told that weather will not dictate changes in the carnival's dates. Instead, activities will be designed to conform to the weather. The merchants also backed an idea by the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce to develop a business directory, while it was noted that gift certificates for Syracuse businesses were available through the chamber. Reassessment notices to be mailed this Friday

The long awaited Form Ils, notice of reassessment values, will be mailed Friday, Dec. 15, for those residents of Syracuse. North Webster. Milford and Van Buren Township. Residents of Tippecanoe Township and Turkey Creek Township will probably receive their forms after Christmas. All property owners will be receiving Form 11. regardless if the home owner or the bank pav the property taxes. Those who live in the area where forms are in the December 15 mailing but do not get their forms by Christmas are asked to call their local assessor or township trustee/assessor. Local legislators to meet Saturday

A meeting designed to. "get the temperature of what the people feel." according to Senator Robert Meeks (LaGrange), will be held Saturday. Dec. 16. Cash prizes in decorating contest There will be cash prizes for the winners of the Christmas decorating contest, compliments of NIPSCO. The contest, sponsored by the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce will feature two categories for judging. Those categories are businesses and residences, both of which have to be located within Turkey Creek Township. The deadline for calling in to be eligible for judging in this year's Christmas Decorating Contest in Syracuse is noon on December 18. All participants will be judged by members of the Wawasee High School art department. Those-interested in participating in this year's contest should call the chamber office at 457-5637.
