Warriors defeat DeKalb after lopsided loss to Concord

The Milford eighth grade boys’ basketball team improved to 2-1 after a 44-24 win at Nappanee last week. Craig Whetten led the win with 18 points while Dan Duncan added nine points and 12 rebounds. Kurt Beer added seven points in the win while Eric Speicher netted six and had five assists. Nate Haugh and Ryan Kaiser completed the scoring for the Trojans with two points each. The Milford seventh grade boys’ eagers went to 3-0 on the year with a 43-40 overtime victory over Nappanee last week. Rob Smith led the Trojans with 17 points while P.J. Weisser had 13 and Scott Eisenhour scored six. Chris Henson (four), Trent Beer (two). Jay Haab (two) and Matt Mast (one) completed the scoring for the winners. Smith led the squad with 17 rebounds while Weisser collected 11 and Eisenhour had nine. I By MITCHELL STINSON Staff Writer The Wawasee Lady Warriors dropped to 1-3 on the young basketball season with two losses on the road in the past week The rough road trip began with an 82-26 thrashing by the Concord Minutewomen last Thursday. Nov. 30. It ended on Monday with a 44-25 defeat at the hands of the Elkhart Central Lady Blue Blazers. There weren’t many positives for Wawasee’s squad to take away trom the Concord game, but coach Jim Hite did see some things he liked in Monday’s game at Elkhart. "We played a real good defensive game.’’ he said “We just didn't have any offensive punch on the other end. " Hite said that the Lady Blazers have a potent offense and that it was "quite a feat" to hold them to just 44 points. HONORED WARRIORS — (top) and Tim Lilly (bottom) were recently named to the Associated Press (AP) All-State football team. Lilly, who smashed Wawasee High School receiving records last season, earned the highest honor of all by being named to the first team. The 17-year-old senior had an impressive 19X9 season, accumulating 731 yards on 67 receptions. Quarterback Conkling and receiver Chad Cotton were honorable mention selections on the athletic squad while Conkling was also a first team selection for the AP All-State Academic squad. Teammates; David Schmahl and Mike Tuttle were honorable mention All-State Academic selections. Conkling helped put the Wawasee passing attack in the school record books, as well. He completed 147-of-2X3 passes (51.9 percent) for 1,5X4 yards. The team total of 1.61 X passing yards set a season record. Cotton made a big impact on the Warriors' team, despite being injured for part of the season He totaled 444 yards on 39 catches. The Warriors went 5-5 on the 19X9 season, including a big win over Port Wayne South Side in first-round sectional action. Conkling, Lilly and Cotton helped reshape a Warrior offense which had traditionally relied on the running attack.

Alyssa Johnson led Wawasee in the Concord game with eight points, while Tameche Shock scored six points in the loss to Central. With the losses, the Lady Warriors dropped to 0-5 on the season. Wawasee’s freshman team won a 36-29 decision over Whitko in a home game last night (Tuesday). Debbie Black scored 13 points to lead the 2-1 Lady Warriors. Wawasee’s squad notched a 32-20 win over Plymouth last Thursday, Nov. 30. Brandi Bray led Wawasee with an 11-point, 13-rebound effort.
