Bishop D'Arcy expresses outrage
(EDITORS NOTE: Bishop John M. D'Arcy of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese recently made the following statement about the recent murders of six Jesuit priests and their housekeepers in El Salvador )
”1 know I speak for all the people of the Diocese of Fort WayneSouth Bend, whatever their religious background, in expressing our pain, sorrow and deep outrage at the murder of six Jesuit priests in El Salvador, as well as the murder of their cook and her 15-year-old daughter. These priests were educators, men who had given their lives to the order founded by St. Ignatius, the Society of Jesus, for the work of Christ.'Their orientation was toward respect for the dignity of every person and helping the people of El Salvador achieve justice
and human and civil rights. Let us all pray that peace and justice and respect for human dignity will return soon to this troubled land. On behalf of the people of the diocese. I extend my deepest

Church psychologist says media holds varied Christian values
(EDITOR S NOTE - Robert S. Clyde, church psychologist at the Nappanee Missionary Church, feels that the news and electronic media are biased and liberally orientated. Relays the news does not hold the same Christian values as the general population and has always been especially down on Israel. It was because of this frustration that Clyde submitted the following article to The MailJournal.) Fair Play? “There would not have been a single Arab refugee if the Arabs had accepted the 1947 United Nations resolution. (The 42nd anniversary of that resolution for the establishment of a Jewish state was marked on November 27. 1989.) The Palestine refugees today would be living in the independent Arab state under the partition plan set forth in the U N. resolution, or in Israel where about 300,000 Arabs now live in peace with their neighbors, if Arabs had not gone to war Affluent Arabs began the exodus in December 1947, immediately after the U.N. vote, expecting to return soon to celebrate a quick Arab victory. Many followed their example. The Arab Higher Committee call

ed on the Arab population to leave en masse. When 200 Jewish soldiers subdued Arab terrorists in Haifa in April 1948, almost all the 62,000 Arab inhabitants promptly left, ignoring the Jewish appeal to stay. The Arab radio of Ramallah called upon the Arabs io get out, promising them they would soon return to kill the Jews and take their property. The number of refugees, which is put at 1,000,000, was inflated from the beginning. The number who actually left what is now Israel could not have exceeded 600.000. At the time of partition, the Arab population in what is Israel was estimated at 747,000. About 160,000 Arabs remained in Israel, in spite of the war and the mass Arab exodus. This means that the total number of bona fide Arab refugees who left Israel was about 587.000. Os these. 20 percent have found permanent homes in the Arab world, mostly in Jordan. This means that the number of bona fide refugees from Israel stands somewhere between 400,000 and 500.000. The Arab leaders who demand repatriation of the refugees do not envisage the return of the refugees to a Jewish state. They

are thinking, and have said so repeatedly, not of Israel but of an Arab Palestine. They do not really mean reappropriation They mean invasion and the destruction of the Jewish stat£. Under such circumstances, it would be reckless for an Israeli government to accede Jo any mass repatriation. Israel has taken in more than 500,000 Jews from Arab lands. Many of them were despoiled and their possessions confiscated before they left for Israel. Inasmuch as the Jewish communities have come out of the Arab lands to Israel, it would seem logical for the Arab countries to undertake the resettlement of the Arab refugees. Some Arab countries have millions of acres of fertile land, immense areas which are abandoned and need labor.” Robert S. Clyde is a church psychologist at the doctoral level.
