Swim squad 1-1 after loss
I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Staff Writer The Wawasee boys’ swim squad evened its season mark at 1-1 after suffering a 93-79 setback at LaPorte Monday. “They beat us with depth and that’s the area that we knew would be a problem spot for us and something that we have to work on,” commented coach Roger Karns after the first defeat of the season. Six lady swimmers compete at state
j By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer The Wawasee girls’ swim team concluded a very successful 1989 campaign this past weekend as six members of the team competed in the IHSAA State Swimming and Diving Finals at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis. The Lady Warriors’ “diving duo” of senior Julie Gunn and junior Dawn Firestone placed 13th and 14th, respectively, at the competition. Gunn's finish marked the second consecutive year that she has placed 13th at the state meet while Firestone's effort was her first trip to the finals. Heading into the competition, Gunn was seeded ninth while Firestone was 22nd. "Dawn dove very well and the girls finished out what has been a fine season for us,” said head coach Roger Karns. The team's 200-yard medley relay team of Krista Guimond, Sherry Payne, Lori Boles and Brandee Carlson swam well enough to capture 26th place in the state finals after being seeded in 29th position to begin the com-

- y -'’sWAWASEE WRESTLING VETERANS — The Wawasee Warriors will open their 1989-90 wrestling season by hosting the Warrior Classic Friday and Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. each day, in the wrestling facility at Wawasee High School. The two-day round robin event will include a total of nine teams, including perennial powerhouses Bellmont and Warsaw. Coach Dave VanLue was counting on 10 lettermen to help the Warriors improve on last year’s 8-6 dual meet mark before losing Dan Clevenger for the season. Local runners perform well for St. Joe Track Club
The St. Joe Valley Track Club based in Syracuse had 10 teams compete in the T.A.C. (The Athletic Congress) Junior Olympic State Cross Country Championships held recently. In the girls' 9-10 competition, the club’s team captured first overall. Alyson Mills was the individual winner in the event. Amy Cockburn took fourth while Mary Cockburn finished in fifth place. The 9-10 boys' team, which included local resident Matt Siegel, also finished first. The 11-12 girls' team finished the competition in second place. Local runners Koni Leer (sixth). Leslie Garner (13th), Beth Cockburn (22nd), Amy Ellis (21st) and Becca Lape were part of the team.

Dru Hicks and Rodney Obregon were members of the team. The 17-18 girls and the boys' team in the same age category each took firsts. Karma Geyepwas on the girls' team while the boys’ team included Jason Douglas, Eric Mock and Jay Hicks. The club will be sending several individuals to the national meet, since the top two teams and 20 individuals in each division at the state meet qualified for the event. The national meet will be held at Purdue University Saturday. Dec. 9.
