Panthers pound Northridge 34-21 for sectional title
| By MITCHELL STINSON I Sports Writer The North Wood Panthers clinched their fourth straight sectional football championship with a 34-21 victory over the Northridge Raiders at Middlebury last Friday. Playing in the Class 3A, Sectional 18 title tilt, the Panthers used a devastating running attack to earn the convincing victory. For most teams, the running attack is considered to be a conservative offensive scheme. But

for the Panthers, it was a bigplay offense, with several long gainers coming off simple rushing plays. The football adage of “four yards and a cloud of dust’’ became “40 yards and a cloud of dust” for the Panthers. Senior running back Jason Hahn opened North Wood’s firsthalf scoring barrage with a 21-yard run early in the first quarter. The extra-point kick made it 7-0. Quarterback Jay Crain made it 13-0 when he scampered 55 yards into the end zone at 5:42 of the first stanza.

well. The course was in good shape but the air had a bite to it. “The footing and everything was good,” Minton said. "It was just super cold and it was windy.” It was a far cry from the previous week, when warm conditions prevailed at the North Manchester Semi-state. Douglas put in the best performance of his running career at the semi-state, taking third place overall in a school-record time of 15:56. But the Warriors’ team didn’t keep pace with its senior leader and came up 30 points short of earning the fourth and final state qualifying spot. Cold weather didn’t seem to agree with Douglas in 1989 postseason action. He failed to crack the top 10 at the Elkhart Regional, which was run at a snow-covered Ox Bow Park in Dunlap. But he took fourth place at the East Noble Sectional, under more moderate temperatures. Overall, Douglas enjoyed an outstanding season for the Wawasee cross country team. Minton said a lackluster day at the state competition doesn't change what Douglas meant to the team this year. “It’s a disappointment, the time (he had) down there, but it can’t take away from the season he had,” the coach said. Douglas led by example for a team that recorded the first undefeated cross country season (12-0) in school history. He was usually the first runner to cross the finish line and was always the first Warrior to come across. Only two runners ever beat Douglas in Northern Lakes Conference action. One was Plymouth’s Larry
Early in the second quarter, Crain set up North Wood’s third score with a 40-yard run to the Raider 2-yard line. Jody Lengacher culminated the drive with a 2-yard scoring plunge, and the score stood at 19-0. The Raiders got back into the game at 8:28 of the quarter, when Chris Frey raced 16 yards and dove into the end zone for the touchdown. The extra-point kick made the score 19-7. But the Panthers showed they were still in control of the game, as they scored two more touchdowns before the end of the

When halftime mercifully rolled around, a dejected Raiders squad found itself behind 34-7. the job against the Northridge offense. The Panthers ended up accumulating more than 300 yards rushing, with much of that total coming in the first half. And despite the cold conditions, North Wood’s sure-handed ball carriers didn’t commit any turnovers. Portable heating units were available for players on the sidelines and fans huddled together for warmth beneath blankets. The weather didn’t seem to bother North Wood’s gridiron heroes at the end of the game, however, as they displayed their sectional championship trophy, while hamming it up for photographers.
