Gridders fall in sectional action

I By MITCHELL STINSON Sports H rner It may havg-betn an omen whejj-a gloomy haze settled over the'Dekalb High School football field before sectional action last Friday. By the end of the game, the Wawasee Warriors were feeling pretty gloomy themselves, suffering a 23-8 defeat at the hands of the sixth-ranked Barons *The Warriors went into the game fresh off an impressive 20-14 victory over Fort Wayne South Side in the opening round of the sectional But the high powered Wawasee offense found itself styfniedyfyr most of the game, ay the Baron defense constantly pressured quarterback Chris Conkling. "It just took us too long to get everything in sync offensively, and you have to remember Dekalb has an excellent defense." said Warriors' coach Myron Dickerson. ’ Dickerson said his team hurt JiselLin the first half by running incorrect plays and formations At one point. Dickerson called time out and. stormed onto the field to give an enthusiastic refresher course on the team playbook. "That was the whole problem." he said "We weren't running the plays that were being called from the sidelines. " The Warriors suffered a demoralizing setback early in the game when a high snap led to a fumbled punt attempt and a Adult Basketball League kicks off season The Wawasee Adult Basketball League opened play on Monday, with four games on the slate. Dana Corporation. Kbzon. Sylvan and Sturonjac all came away with opening day victories. Dana notched a 70-67 win over Pilcher’s Shoes. Shawn Beard knocked in 16 points for the winners while Eric Pavelki had a game-high 17 points in a losing cause. Kozon beat Augsburgers. 49-32. behind the 13-point effort of John Kozon. Stacy Kuhn scored a game-high 15 points for Augsburgers. In other action. Sylvan edged Buhrt Builders by a 69-63 margin. Doug Thwaits ied Sylvan with 19 points, while Brian Kistler added 14 for the losers In the final contest, Sturonjac scored a convincing 87-63 victory over Wawasee Boat Company

Dekalb touchdown. Baron defender MatFMiller pounced on the loose ball in the end zone to give Dekalb the early lead. Tom Allison s extra point kick made it 7-()at-6:36 of the first quarter. Not to be outdone, the Barons offense put together an 11-play. 53-yard touchdown drive to make it 13-0. Tom Findley culminated the drive with a five-yard touchdown run at 11:56 of the second quarter The Barons increased their lead to 16-0 at 5:22 of the third quarter when Tom Allison slammed a long-range field goal from 40 yards out. Wawasee’s offense finally got untracked late in the third quarter as Conkling ran and passed his team toward a touchdown. The senior signal -ca 11 e d culminated a 12-play, 66-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge. Tim Lilly hauled in the extra point conversion pass to make it 16-8. with 26 seconds left in the third quarter. The Warriors drove.into Baron territory late in the fourth quarter, but an interception killed the comeback, Dekalb put the game out of reach three plays later, when Tom Findley caught a short pass from quarterback Erik Weber and raced 83 yards into the end zone The extra point kick made it 23-8 with 2:42 left in the contest. The long gainer was one of the few given up by the Warrior defense. Other than that big touchdown play. Wawasee’s defenders did a good job keeping their team in the game. "We hit well the entire game. " Dickerson said. "There's no doubt aboutit. We hit from the word go." Dickerson said the defense came a long way through the season. Most opponents thought Wawasee had a good offense and questionable defense But it was the defensive unit that put in the most consistent effort last Friday. Coach Dickerson views the 1989 season as a positive one The team ended up compiling a 5-5 record, with many of those losses coming by narrow margins. The Warriors were competitive in close defeats against top-notch teams like North Wood. Goshen and Dekalb. "We've played the best, pretty much, that they could offer and we've stood tall the whole way. ' Dickerson said of his squad. The Warrior passing attack was in fine form in 1989. with a couple of school records going by the wayside Although he was held to just one reception against Dekalb. Tim Lilly had an outstanding season He shattered the school receiving record by ac-

cumulating 731 yards on 67 receptions. In addition to becoming the school's leading career passer. Conkling helped establish a school record of passing yardage in one season. The new mark now stands at 1.618 yards. While the Warriors co- - template their season, the Barons will be gearing up for a sectional championship game against Columbia City on Friday The final team statistigSTor the 1989 Warriors follow: ■ On offense, the team rushed the ball a total of 293 times for 910 yards (3.1 yards per carry).
