Boys' and girls' harriers advance to semi-state, regional

By MITCHELL STINSON .Sports Writer

It was a day that looked more suited for cross country skiing than running. But cold weather couldn’t stop the red hot racers from Wawasee High School during post season cross country action at Elkhart’s Dunlap Park last Saturday. Wawasee was a double winner, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams qualifying for a trip to North Manchester this Saturday for semi-state and regional action, respectively.. Competing in a field of 10 teams, the Warriors took second place in boys’ regional play. Earlier in the day, the Lady Warriors placed fourth in the 14-team girls’ sectional. Warriors’ coach Jerry Minton didn’t seem very confident following the boys' meet, after watching his top runners finish further back than expected. But when the final results were in, the Warriors’ solid team effort was good enough to earn them the second of four qualifying berths. “Our fourth and fifth runners were up real high and ran real well,” Minton said. “That’s where we beat the other teams.” Coach Minton said the team didn’t run bad, but he had hoped that the Warriors would have Stayed closer to first-place Westview. The highly-ranked Westview squad took the regional championship with a low total of 61 points, while Wawasee recorded 110 points en route to its

second-place finish. East Noble was just a shade behind the Warriors, at 112, and West Noble grabbed the final qualifying berth with a score of 119. Plymouth’s Larry Boener won the meet in a time of 17 minutes flat. The Warrior’s best performance came from Jason Douglas, who took 12th place overall, at 17:37. Teammates Eric Streby and Eric Mock finished 15th and 28th, respectively. The Warriors’ fourth and fifthplace finishers, who coach Minton said were so important, were Matt Johnson and Chad Jones. Johnson took 33rd overall while Jones was just a second behind in 34th place. Minton said the team will need to perform better Saturday in semi-state action. Sixteen of the area’s finest harrier squads will be shooting for one of the four qualifying berths to state competition. “We re going to have to run our best this week to get out,” he said. “We’re going to have to run a lot closer to Westview. ” Last year’s Warrior squad took fourth place at the semi-state, before finishing 13th at state competition in Indianapolis the following week. Girls Hit Their Stride With their fine performance on Saturday, the Lady Warriors have already reached their season’s goal. Advancing out of the sectional was an enormous challenge to Wawasee’s lady harriers, but they came through with flying colors. In fact, they came within one

placed 37th. It was a true team effort for Wawasee’s girls, with the top five runners finishing within a minute of each other. There is no semi-state level for girls’ cross country, so the top four qualifiers at North Manchester will advance straight to state competition. The Lady Warriors know that cracking the top four will be a tall order. “It. would be nice to get to state, but if we don’t and we run well, we’ll still be happy,” Minton said. OUTDOORS FISHIN’ TIPS FROM THE HUMMINBIRD PROS by Larry Colombo

It’s trophy time! Some of the biggest bass of the year will be caught during this period. With the water warming up, bass begin to get active. The pre-spawn period finds the female largemouth at her heaviest weight of the year. Because they’re hungry a bass will forage heavily right before going on the bed. There’s not a better time of year to catch the wallhanger than right now. A spinner bait becomes the big bass fisherman’s most deadly weapon. The fish have moved into shallower water, thus a tandemspin is often preferred. The combination of smaller Colorado blade in front of a larger willow-leaf blade is excellent. Blade colors are a matterof preference. I still like white or nickle. Trailer hooks are a big plus now. Be sure all spinner bait hooks are needle sharp.

Fish visible structure, casting at targets. Since the big fish have moved shallow, approach your area slowly and quietly to avoid spooking your quarry. Because water temperature has a significant effect on the habits of the fish during this period, a temp guage can be one of your most essential tools. Seek the sheltered bays where the sun has warmed the water, watch for movement of bait-fish and speed up retrieve. Vibrating lures, loaded with shot and designed to rattle may be your most productive type of crankbait this time of year. Retrieve it fast and hold on tight. A bass strikes this type of lure harder than most others. Tips from the Humminbird Pros are presented by Humminbird, Eufaula, Alabama. Good Fishing with America's #1 Depth Sounder.
