Just as you come over the hill you are startled to see in the early morning light a buffalo standing among the grazing cows up ahead. You are fascinated, so you keep glancing in that dire tion as you drive. When yc t close enough, you see that ,wo cows were-standing close together in such away as to give the illusion of a buffalo. "Boy, my eyes sure fooled me that time," you mutter to yourself. Things, people and situations are often like that. They look very different when you get closer to them. Like that morning I came around the corner of our house and was suddenly face-to-face with this big, gruff dog that belongs to my neighbor. He was the one that considered it his duty to daily fertilize my lawn. (Speaking of duty, did you ever notice how many dogs have such a Strong sense of it? Like those that feel obligated to bite every Coping Vv I : s i : — stress Clayton Barbeau's tape series on "Ways to Cope With Life's Stress" will be presented at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Syracuse beginning Thursday. mail carrier they see, or to chase every passing car for certain predictable distances?) Pity dogs, or people, who are slaves to ‘duty.’ Like the person who says, "I don’t want to gossip, but I feel it my duty to tell you ...” See what I mean? Back to 'big dog.' Before that unnerving morning when I first saw him close-up. I had, from the security of my living room, observed him many times dutifully making his daily deposits of fresh fertilizer on my lawn. I always tried to make a mental note of where not to step or where to use caution that next time I mowed the lawn. Please don't think I dislike dogs, or don’t believe in fertilizer. I'm for both — but of the right kind and in their proper places. But this slow process of ‘spot fertilization' I considered very improper and annoying to say the least. Just take a look at how uneven the grass grows on lawns thus treated. One morning, when my irritation was more acute than usual, I had bravely declared, “Enough is enough!” If I ever get the chance. I’m gonna tell that stupid mutt just what I think of his kind of froc -fertilizer! We’ll got- this settled once and for all. ’ That release of ‘energy’ seemed to help me feel better for the moment and I forgot about the dog . . . until that day I was out walking early and he came around the corner of the house. There we met. face-to-face. Only this time, I did not have the safety of seeing him from behind our living room window. Strange, isn't it. how a close-up view of dog§, or people, changes one's perception of them? Since I have such little respect for cowards and liars, I summoned all my courage and looked ‘big dog' straight in the eye and said, ‘Sir, I'd like you to know that I know that you are the one who has taken it upon yourself to make daily deposits on the bank of my lawn without my permission. Furthermore, you have been using an unauthorized type of fertilizer. I demand that you cease and desist from such activity immediately. Understand?”

With his head cocked at a curious angle, he listened to my brave words (delivered, I admit, in a weak, timid voice) as if asking me what it was I really wanted to say. After an awesome silence, with a twitch of his curled lip, he looked me in the eye and said, “GRRRRRR.” That’s all he said. But he said a lot with that one word! My interpretation of it was something like this: “Mister f I will fertilize whatever lawn I please, whenever I wish, and in the way I choose. And if you don’t like it you can just-. . . step over it.” I had never liked the idea of stepping over it before, but for some reason, at that particular moment, it sounded like a good idea. Then and there the two of us declared a truce in pur war; a truce which later evolved — would you believe — into a mutual respect and finally into a real friendship. Strange how one’s ideas can change when faced with stern realities of various sorts, and how fast they can change at times. Funny, too, how you can learn to appreciate different kinds of dogs — and people — who don’t always do what you wish they would, or in the way you might prefer. But seeing them close-up makes a big difference. I’m embarrassed now when I remember the many times I have secretly wished that big dog would ‘drop dead.' He really is a lot of company and comfort to the

lonely old man next door. And, too, the beast certainly helps to make life interesting, and a challenge for me. Speaking of the dear old man next door, I recall when, months ago, J thought he was as gruff and as mean as his dog seemed to be. I remember the day when I hesitated to share some of the chocolate chip cookies my wife had just baked. But she insisted. Sheepishly, I took the seranwrapped plate of still-warm delicacies to his back door, wondering if he would accept them. But as he slowly took them, I thought I detected a bit of life and light in his sad eyes for the first time since I had known him. “Have a seat” he said, pointing to the chair on the other side of the cluttered kitchen table. Sitting down, I finally broke the uneasy silence. “My Maxie breaks down occasionally and makes my favorite cookies, and we thought maybe you might like to taste them.” “They do look good,” he said as he slipped a big one from under the plastic. When the flavors had time to race to his aged taste buds, the light in his pale-grey eyes was quite evident. Suddenly, I got a warm and relaxed feeling. We talked tor an hour or more over the cookies and instant coffee he pulled down from the old blue cupboard, He shared with me how his beloved wife had been killed in the auto accident when ‘big dog' was only a cuddly pup.
ference, Pastor Jefry Walden said, “Missions is not just a part of our ministry, it is the very heart of what God has called us to do. Since he and the dog had both survived the crash, a special feeling of protectiveness developed between them. “I don’t know what I’ll do if and when he grows old and dies. He’s all I’ve got,” he said wistfully. Before returning to my anxious Maxie, I had the whole life history of the sweet old man next door. Have you noticed how different people appear when you see them close-up? And have you observed how someone keeps filling your cup when you are willing to pour out a bit of human kindness here and there? We all need to drink from this special ‘cup’ occasionally. Slowly, I’m learning that things, situations, dogs, and people appear a lot different when you take a careful look . . . closeup.
