Runners qualify for Elkhart regional

IBy MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer The Warriors boys’ cross coun- « try team qualified for upcoming regional action by taking third place at the East Noble Sectional in Kendallville last Saturday. Wawasee’s squad will join runners from nine other teams at Ox Bow Park in Dunlap this Saturday to compete in the Elkhart Regional. The Westview Warriors took first place in the sectional with a low score of 53. East Noble's ■- Knights placed second, at 68. and Wawasee earned the third position with a total of 79. Also advancing to the regional were fourthplace Dekalb and fifth-place West Noble. “Third place, we’ll take this week,” said Wawasee coach Jerry Minton. “Next week, we’ll take second." Jason Douglas was the Warriors’ top finisher, taking fourth overall in a time of 16 minutes, 54 seconds. The Milford football squad concluded its season with a 16-12 loss to Avilla October 9. The Trojans scored on a 35-yard touchdown reception by Nate Haugh and a 20-yard scoring run by Craig Whetten as they dropped their final game of the season. Jeff Roose led the defensive effort for the team with several tackles for losses. The members of the Trojan squad this season were: Ralph Fink, Robbie Chalk, Scott Eisenhour. Other runners who contributed to the Warrior cause were Eric Streby (17th), Eric Mock (23rd) and Matt Jones (25th). The Eastside Blazers failed to qualify for the regional despite coming into the sectional with a state ranking of 16th. their chances were hurt when one of their top runners injured himself during the race. “I was surprised Eastside didn’t advance out . . . which shows you what the rankings mean," Minton said. The unranked Warriors head into the regional, looking for one of four berths to the Manchester semi-state. The regional features the top five teams from the Elkhart Sectional, along with the East Noble Sectional qualifiers. Advancing teams from the Elkhart Sectional include Elkhart Central, Elkhart Memorial. Goshen, North Wood and Plymouth.

Swim coach gets career coaching victories 100 and 101

I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer The Wawasee girls’ swim squad upped its season mark to 11-2 after posting victories over Culver Girls' Academy (47-36) and Northridge (72-11) m a double-dual meet at home last night (Tuesday). The win, in the final home meet of the season for the Lady Warriors, gave firstyear coach Roger Karns his 100th and 101st career coaching victories.

At the beginning of the cross country season, the Warriors set a goal of cracking the top nine at state competition. Last Saturday’s sectional was the first step toward that goal. Minton thinks his team will be in the proper frame of mind for the second step at Ox Bow Park this weekend. “It’s (Ox Bow Park) our kids’ favorite course and everybody else just hates it.” he said. While the boys’ teams are getting ready to run on Saturday, 24 girls' teams will be gearing up for their sectional at Ox Bow Wawasee’s lady harriers should have their hands full since onlyfour teams will advance to the regional.
