"It didn't work out that way" The Redskins scored four times, op two touchdowns and two field goals, while holding Wawasee's offense to two touchdowns. gave Goshen's gridders an opportunity to show character in the unfamiliar position of being behind. "I was very proud of our kids." said Redskins coach Randy Robertson. "Both times after being down, we fought back real well." The Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead at 1:24 of the first quarter when Chris Conkling plunged into the end zone on a one-yard quarterback sneak. The score was set up by Tim Lilly, who intercepted a Redskin pass and returned it 29 yards to the Goshen 19-yardline. The Redskins cut the margin to 7-3 at 6.06 of the second quarter when Rick Cain kicked a 33-yard field goal The booted ball barely fell through the uprights after hitting the right goal post. Goshen's gridders regained the lead late in the second quarter on a 12-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Kaufman from quarterback Darin Sorg Cain's extra point kick made it 10-7 at the half. Lilly culminated the drive with a 13-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Chris Conkling The extra point attempt failed as the Warriors held on to a 13-10 lead "To put on a drive like that against a team of that caliber, was outstanding." Dickerson said Wawasee fans didn't have much time to savor the lead, however, as a few minutes later. Redskin running back Brad Daniels scored on a 49-yard draw play. Cain made the extra point and the score stood at 17-13. with 4:28 left in the third quarter. Things didn't get any better for the Warriors in the fourth quarter At 10:52 of the stanza, punter Randy Cesco mishandled a low snap from center and the Redskins took over on the Wawasee 13-yard line. made the all-NLC team as an atlarge selection The 6-foot-3 signal-caller may be on the verge of joining Lilly in the record books The Warriors need only 105 more yards to surpass the team record of 1.544. set in 1975. Chad Cotton made the all-NLC defensive team as an at-large

"There's no question about it." The 4-4 Archers are led by their standout senior quarterback. Juan Gorman. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound signal-caller is a threat on the ground as well as in the air. He passed for 943 yards dur-» ing the regular season and led his team in rushing with 663 yards. Dickerson raves about the abilities of Gorman, saying he is a better athlete than Rick Mirer, the ex-Goshen quarterback who rewrote the Indiana high school football record book last season " In the 10 years I've been around i coaching i. I haven't seen anybody walk on the field with his kind of ability. " Dickerson said. The Archers' 500 record can be deceiving because they play in the Summit Athletic Conference iSAC), one of the toughest divisions in the state. South Side coach John Hester says there are always four or five SAC teams ranked in the state's top 20. " It s going to be a relief getting out of the conference, although there are a lot of other good teams in the Northeast part of the state." Hester said. South Side's gridders have plenty of big boys to move people around in the trenches. The defensive linemen average about 205 pounds while the offensive line averages in the 195-pound range Gorman isn't the only weapon in the Archers' highscoring attack. Sophomore Keith Hinton (5-foot-8 170 pounds > compiled 651 yards on the ground this year, while receiver Ronnie Fowlkes (5-foot-11. 160 pounds' was good for 425 yards on 27 receptions. In their last outing, the Archers pulled a come-from-behind 40-31 victory over the Huntington North Vikings. Gorman had an outstanding evening, accumulating 286 yards through the air. while throwing four touchdown passes. He also scored a touchdown on the ground and passed for five extra point conversions. It's that kind of firepower that prompts Dickerson to say that the Warrior offense is going to have put together some drives and keep South Side's offense on the sidelines. "We are going to have to move

He notes that Warrior quarterback Chris Conkling has a good arm and that receiver Tim Lilly has "good hands. " "We are going to have to playgood defense and put pressure on the quarterback.'' Hester predicted Inconsistency has been the drawback of the Archers this year.
