Warrior harrier is a cross country giant

Jason Douglas looks like any other normal student when he walks down the halls of Wawasga High School. Basketball and foot? ball stars may attract attention because of their large size, but Douglas’s 5-foot-5, 108-pound frame doesn’t command attention. That is, until you’ve seen him blow away the competition at a Warrior cross country meet. When it comes to running, Douglas may as well be seven feet tall. The record-setting senior has been the dominant factor for an undefeated Warrior team that recently captured the Northern Lakes Conference round-robin championship. “I think he’s one of the best runners in all Northern Indiana,” said Wawasee coach Jerry Minton. As the Warriors jumped out to** a 5-0 record, Douglas finished first in every meet. And the second-place finishers were usually a long way behind him. He saved his best work for September 16 when the Warriors ran in the West Noble Invitational, also known as the Jason Douglas Showcase. Last year, he took fourth place overall at West Noble in a schoolrecord time of 16:09. This year, he chopped six seconds off that time en route to a first-place finish. Why does Douglas do so well at West .Noble? It may just be because he likes the appearance of the “nice course” with its hills and long straight aways. “There's just something about it,” Douglas said. “I love the atmosphere.” The honors kept accumulating during a home meet against Columbia City and Churubusco on Thursday, Sept 21. While his team notched two easy victories, Douglas set a new course record, knocking three seconds off the old time of 16:27, set by Plymouth's Glen Weidner? Five days later, Douglas partook in another couple of milestones at the Wawasee High School course. He chopped seven seconds off his previous record and the Warriors clinched the NLC round-robin title with a victory over arch-rival Plymouth. Douglas’ performance was only good enough for second place, however, as Larry Boener brought course record honors back to Plymouth with a time of 16 minutes flat. With every meet, Douglas solidifies his position as one of the

area’s finest runners. He wasn't always the team’s center of attention, however. He shared the limelight with teammate Jeff Carey last year as the Warriors put together the best cross country season in school history. The two harriers formed one of the finest one-two punches around, leading their team to state competition, and a final ranking of 14th. Carey usually led the way during the regular season but Douglas gave cross country fans a glimpse of things to come when he established himself as the Warriors’ best clutch runner in post-season action. Douglas was the first Warrior across the finish line in regional, semi-state and state competitions He finished seventh at the Regional, 23rd at the North Manchester Semi-State and 41st at the big show in Indianapolis. It was a fine finish to a fine junior year, but Douglas didn't rest on his laurels. He trained hard in the off-season and improved even more. “I feel a lot stronger, I feel like I’m quicker,” Douglas said last Thursday.’“l put more miles in this summer and I feel that's helped me quite a bit.” Carey received team Most Valuable Player honors at the end of the 1988 season. In addition to being an outstanding runner, he accepted the mantle of leader-

ship. During practices, he could be heard barking out words of inspiration to teammates. Carey is a freshman at Huntington College now and part of that leadership role has T>een passed on to Douglas. But, with seven other seniors on the teauu** Douglas has plenty of help in the leadership department and he hasn’t felt a need to take charge. “It’s been a little more demandding but not that much,” he saitf of his new role. Douglas and Carey were pretty evenly matched last year and their inter-competition supposedly made them better fanners. But Douglas has recorded faster times this season, deSpite running unchallenged in most meets. He says he actually/runs better

when he’s not being pressured by anybody. “When I’m out there by myself I get my legs loose and run natural,”.he explained. “It’s like a bird flying free.” Douglas may be the most important member of the flock but he isn’t carrying the team on his back. The 18th-ranked Warriors have an effective mix of veterans & and promising underclassmen. They hope to improve on last year’s 14th-place showing and 'Vrack the top nine in state comj>etition this time around. “It’s gbt the potential to be better,” Douglas said of his team. “If everybody clicks at the right time, we’ll definitely be better.” Cross country isn’t the only sport Douglas “clicks” in. the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events for the school track team and tried his hand at wrestling for the first time last winter. Wrestling in the 103-pound weight class, Douglas compiled a 13-15 record while setting a school record for most escapes, with 36. He does okay in other sports, but the cross country field is where Jason Douglas performs at his finest. It’s been a storybook senior season for Wawasee’s top harrier and a fitting ending to a great high school career. Coach Minton summed up Douglas' contributions to the school’s cross country program, saying. “Jason, since he came up as a freshman, has been one of the best runners we’ve ever had.”
