Crosscountry boys clinch NIC round-robin title

The Wawasee Warriors boys' cross country team established itself as the king of the Northern Lakes Conference yesterday (Tuesday), clinching the roundrobin championship in a home meet against the Plymouth Pilgrims and Northridge Raiders. • The Warriors notched a 22-34 victory over Plymouth and a 15-50 win over Northridge to finish the NLC season with a perfect 6-0 record. Plymouth's Larry Boener won the 3,1-mile race in a course record time of 16 minutes flat, but the Warriors had a dominating team effort, taking three of the top five slots and six of the top 10 positions.

"We didn't really have a good night but now we have to get readv for Saturday/' commented Roger Brady, Wawasee boys' tennis coach, after seeing his squad wrap up the regular season with a 10-4 mark after a 3-2 win at Manchester last night (Tuesday). Jason Hollar posted a .3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Tim McLaughlin at the number-one singles position for the Warriors. Mason Robbins was beaten, 3-6, 2-6. by Manchester's Brian Kreps in numbertwo singles action while teammate Chris Shidler dropped a 2-6, 4-6 decision to Tim Kreps at the. number-three singles spot. "We had a real good week of practice and the times have been coming down real good." said Wawasee coach Jerry Minton. Warrior Jason Douglas recorded a fine time of 16:17. en route to a second-place finish. His performance was good enough to break the old course record, which he set against Columbia City on Thursday, Sept. 21. Eric Streby finished third overall, with a personal record time of 16:46, and Eric Mock was fourth at 17:11. Matt Johnson had the best meet of his career en route to a sixth-place finish and Ryan Shoemaker took the seventh slot. Chad Jones rounded out the Wawasee top 10 attack by grabbing 10th place. Wawasee's Lady Harriers turned in a fine performance, but the competition was. just a little too tough Sophomore Mel Hobbs broke her own school record, taking sixth place in 15:55. Teammates Lori Gargett and Angie Garner beat the old school record too. Gargett finished eighth in a time of 16 minutes flat and Garner was 10th in 16:01. The Wawasee trio combined with teammates Gina Minton and Staci Freel to break the school team record. Their combined time of 82:22 chopped 19 seconds
