Cat health month ending
September is National Cat Health Month. With the end of September drawing near, the American Veterinary Medical Association reminds cat owners to look carefully at their cat s health care program and to visit their local veterinarian if their cat is in need of vaccinations, examination, dentistry or other types of health care. Proper care of cats begins at home. Cats should be fed a good quality, name-brand kitten food until they are a year old and should then be changed to a good name-brand cat food. If more than 20 percent of a cat’s diet consists of table food, the diet is probably unbalanced. Diets high in fish may cause Vitamin A toxicity. The other common diet that leads to problems in cats is a dog food diet. Dog food lacks taurine, an essential amino acid for cats.

Cats that are deficient in taurine may have problems with vision. Although indoor cats have less exposure to disease and injury that cats which are allowed to roam, they too should be vaccinated for feline distemper, upper respiratory diseases and rabies. All cats should be tested for felinne leukemia, a viral disease of cats that may cause immune suppression. Even healthy cats with no history of health problems can be inapparent carriers of this disease. If cats test negative for feline leukemia, they should then be vaccinated against the disease. Vaccinations, annual physical examinations and annual stool checks will help to keep our feline friends healthy, happy and free from disease.
