Syracuse seventh grader Erica Schieler expresses her feelings in letters
By MARY JANE LORTON Staff Writer
When some person or some event really affects Erica Schieler of Syracuse, whoever is involved is likely to hear about it in the form of a letter This shy 12-year-old is anything but timid when it comes to putting ink on paper in an effort to express her feelings on a particular event or to get something that she really wants. The daughter of Jan and John Schieler of Syracuse, Erica is a seventh grader at Syracuse Junior High. An avid reader. Erica holds a fascination for mysteries and adventure stories. After hearing about the books on the mysterious case of Harold Morris, a man she describes as having been falsely convicted of robbery and murder. Erica wrote to Morris asking for the books.
Profile
Although Erica says Morris never committed the crimes, she says he went to* prison from 1970 to 1981 until he received a full pardon. When she wrote to him. she says she "just asked for the books." She was pleasantly surprised when she not only received the books. Twice Pardoned and Beyond the Barriers, but also received two letters and a picture of Morris. \ The compare hat published the two books has since started sending Erica magazines and she says that Morris writes an occasional article io? this publication. She has also seen him on a videotape at school where she says he spoke about staying out of trouble. "Exciting" is the adjective Erica carefully chooses to describe the two books written bv and about Morris. "I learned what he went

through in prison and learned prison is a very hard life,” tells Erica. He prayed that he would get out and he did," she remarks. The next letter that Erica pulls out of the large manila envelope where she keeps her mail is from NASA. Erica explains that when she heard about the crashing and burning of the Space Shuttle Challenger, she wrote a letter to NASA to “express my sympathy at the loss of these people who had died.” She continues by reading off their names, "Francis R. Scobee, Michael J. Smith, Judith A. Resnik. Ellison S. Onizuka, Ronald E. McNair, Gregory B. Jarvic and S. Christa McAuliffe.” She found the address for NASA in a newspaper, she says, adding, “I don't know why it was in there.” Although she was not expecting any response. Erica did receive a letter of thanks from the deputy director of public affairs at NASA. Following the election of George Bush as president of the United States, Erica says she wrote to him telling him she “was glad he was elected president and that my parents had voted for him.” She addressed the letter to the White House. Washington. D C., and was confident that he would receive her correspondence. “He wrote back.” Erica says happily, “and when I got the letter I went screaming down to my mom's office!” A picture of the president was enclosed with the letter that told Erica to enjoy the summer with her family and friends and to read a book or two during the summer. Since Erica enjoys reading, this advice was easily taken. In addition to books, Erica also likes sports, especially volleyball, softball, soccer and basketball. Her favorite subjects are math and social studies and Erica is hoping that these interests will land her a news reporter position on television in the future. “She has to overcome her shyness first," comments Jan But Erica isconfident that she can do it especially since she loves the news. Jan explains that "her dad is a news buff and she (Erica) has watched it since she was old enough to know what it w’as." As for the immediate future. Erica says she has plans for a letter to Vice President Dan Quayle. Although she is not certain exactly what she is going to write, she definitely will tell him that she "likes the fact he’s from Indiana"

All consumers in the US should know their rights and know where to turn when they feel these rights have been infringed upon. As part of the ongoing efforts of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. Inc (CBBB) to protect all consumers by promoting ethical practices in the marketplace, the CBBB has published Spanish versions of "Tips On Refunds And Exchanges" and "What Is A BBB?” as part of its Consumer Information Series. "Tips On Refunds And Exchanges" (“Consejos Sobre Reembolsos E Intercambios") provides a checklist of factors to consider before making a purchase. The booklet also explains the differences between an exchange, refund, and a return for credit. For example, in an exchange. the item may be returned and another item of the same kind may be taken in its place; under a refund policy, the customer’s money is returned; and in a return for credit, on return of the purchased item, the customer is given a credit slip for an amount which he or she may apply towards- the purchase-, of any other items in the store.
