Football team drops first game
IBy MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer The odds finally caught up with Wawasee High School's version of the "cardiac kids '. After pulling out come-from-behmd victories in their first two games of the season, the Warriors' football team w’as. bypassed by the Concord Minutemen. 21-3. The loss evened Wawasees record to 1-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference and 2-1 overall. The Minutemen are also 1-1 and 2-1. “We had more mental mistakes than you can afford to have in a game. Wawasee coach Myron Dickerson said. It was a game of big plays and rain delays. The start of the game was postponed by more than an hour because of stormy weather that passed through Syracuse. Fans and players alike holed up inside Wawasee High School until the weather improved. Dickerson doesn't blame any of his problems on the weather or the delay, however. "The delay was for both teams." he explained. “It rained on both teams." When the two teams finally did take the field, it was the Minutemen who drew first blood in the opening quarter After Warrior quarterback Chris Conkling was intercepted for the first time this season, the Minutemen took over and embarked on a sixplay. 43-yard touchdown drive. Concord quarterback Matt Gerber culminated the drive with a seven-yard run. Cein Asedra added the extra point to make it 7-0. The Warriors put in their comeback bid late in the second quarter. With Conkling passing on almost every play. Wawasee s offense put together a 17-play. 76-yard drive to the Concord fouryard line. The drive stalled, however, and the Warriors had to settle for a 21-yard field goal by Randy Cesco. As the first half ended the Warriors were in striking distance, trailing just 7-3. It appeared that the Warriors had gained the upper hand early in the third quarter when.Cesco boomed a 61-yard punt to the Concord one-yard line The Minutemen fumbled on their first play but were able to come up with the ball Dickerson thinks the second-down play was the key one. however. On this play the Minutemen threw a dangerous pass over the middle which a Wawasee defender tipped Unfortunately for the Warriors, the deflected ball dropped into the hands of another Concord receiver. The play netted 15 yards and the Minutemen had some breathing room Concord increased the lead to 14-3 early in the fourth quarter when Gerber connected with Craig Miller on a 50-yard touchdown play Once again, the Minutemen were successful by a matter of inches wiwasee defender Jeremy Doerr ..blasted Gerber just as he released the ball and the pass barely got past the Warrior safety One missed tackle later Miller was dancing in the end zone “Those things happen. " Dickerson said. "You don't like to see them happen but they do." Spencer Calhoun put the final nail in the coffin when he ran 44 yards on sweep past dejected Warrior defenders His run set up the game's final touchdown, which he ran in from four yards out. Other than the two big gainers they gave up in the second half. Dickerson was pleased with the
