It happened. . . in Syracuse

10 YEARS ApO, SEPT. 12, 1979 It’s no longer the Weatherhead Company. It's Spicer Axle Division, Dana Corporation. That’s what it is, and that’s what the big sign on the front of the Syracuse plant says. Operating as a screw • machine facility over the years the Weatherhead plant has been in the Syracuse community, the remodeling and refurbishing of the plant will make it into one of the most modern Ford front end axle plants in the Dana Corporation corporate firmament. Cliff and Marty Kinder are spending a brief vacation in the area, visiting friends, "doing a little fishing," and staying with Marty's sister, Nancy Pratt. Miss Julie Method, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Method of Milford, and Miss Debbie Hartman of Syracuse, have returned to Manchester College where they are both seniors. Mrs. Peter Blue gave a program on “Nature I've Enjoyed in Alaska” at the September meeting of the SyracuseWawasee Garden Club. Mrs. Blue spends time in Alaska each year while visiting her children. Mr. and Mrs. William N. Wilson, formerly of Lake Wawasee. now of Nappanee, kicked off the fall social season with a dinner party in their home. 20 YEARS AGO, SEPT. 10. 1909 Enrollment figures in the Lakeland Community School Corporation hit the 2,990 mark Monday and are expected to top 3,000 when official figures are released

jB mMr/' w 'fir f *'■ wl ■ ■ v ifiyF * RUSSIANS TOUR U.S. GIVING BAND CONCERT AND MESSAGE — Peter and Nikolai Pankratz, two men from Russia, are touring the United States with their band, called “Ruscha" (pronounced Russia). and will perform at Wawasee High School on Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m. Their debut album entitled "Come Alive" was released the first part of 1988 and has been touted as one of the best independent debut efforts in Christian Rock history. A song from the album, “Come Home," has reached number one on Christian Rock charts in most major cities, and is still climbing the charts nationally. This is a far cry from the persecuted lives they led in the Soviet Union. Peter and Nikolai credit the God they worship and the freedom they’ve found in this country for their success. The brother-, traveled in Russia, too. to sing in underground churches where they were beaten during regular K.G.B. raids. Their pastors, deacons and youth leaders are still in jail for their beliefs. Their family moved several times to escape persecution, and their grandfather was taken in an early morning siege and frozen to death in a Siberian prison. Nikolai remembers punishment in school for believing in God. “We were always the outcasts of the class. We were laughed at and spat at," he says. "The teachers threw chalk at us, hit us and twisted our ears. They would come up to us and say. ’How can you believe in God?”’ After four years of requests to leave, the Soviet government agreed to let the Pankratz family go. at a cost of $3,000 for each of their nine members. From Germany , they came to America, graduating from Liberty University . Va.. then began to travel to tell their story. It is young Americans "Ruscha” wants to reach with their rock-styled message of commitment. Nikolai says. "American people have been involved in human rights around the world, but they're losing sight of what’s happening in America itself. We want to open the eyes of Americans to the threat and reality of C ommunism and challenge them to take a stand for what is right before it’s too late." Pictured are members of the "Ruscha" band. Front row : Peter Pankratz, Andy Denton, and Nikolai Pankratz. Back row : Michael Jackson and Mike Jacobs.
