Closeness is the importance of all area small churches
I By MARY JANE LORTON Staff Writer
In a family, the number of brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, etc. may vary. There may be very few or there may be many. Any member of a family will probably agree that the numbers are not what is important. What is of importance is the closeness, and the relationships that exist between the members. A family that grows in number only is not the same as a family whose members grow personally or a family who grows closer together. Likewise, the number of members of any congregation is not what should be focused on according to Pastor Allen Giant of Word of Grace Fellowship Church. Although Giant says “we don’t usually number ourselves,” he shares there are about 25 people who come to worship at Word of Grace, located on CR 300E, and Rookstool Rd., southwest of Syracuse. Much like the old building in which members of Word of Grace come to worship, the congregation is built on a sturdy foundation which is not dictated by numbers. A small church, members of Word of Grace enjoy the close interpersonal relationships that are made possible by this family atmosphere. And Peggy Giant, Pastor Giant’s wife, explains that this closeness would still be enjoyed if their congregation increased in size because they would continue to focus on spiritual and personal growth just as they do now. Like Word of Grace, the Northern Lakes Christian Church. Lake Tippecanoe in North Webster, is small with its 20 members. But this number makes the church ‘big’ in that it “promotes a family feeling,” says Karen Mitchell, one of the pastors of the church, "and you get to know each other like a brother or a sister.” Even though numbers may be few in these congregations, "jobs don't diminish in a small church." says Mitchell. She adds instead, all members must participate to complete what is needed to be done. When this particular congregation was looking to put up a tent this summer, for example, Mitchell says that "everyone was out helping to get the tent up." This increased participation brings the congregation together, thereby, building

on this family atmosphere. Although as stated previously, the size of a church is not what is important, churches may vary the way they approach worship depending on the size. Rev. Hubert Schmucker, pastor of Zion Chapel U.B. Church, corner of Syra-Web Road and CR 1000 N, Syracuse, says that the small number of members of his congregation enable greater opportunities for sharing of praise and testimonies of what is going on in their lives. With a small membership, many are able to involve themselves.

Again, this sharing builds up a feeling of family. Whether people attend a church that is big or small, Mitchell points out that “they are coming for a reason, they are drawn by God and have a need for human fellowship.” In addition. Pastor Giant says, "Every church started small and has grown up. The Lord started the first family with just Adam and Eve." Since that time, God’s family has grown, he explains and "everyone belongs to each? other."
