(By SCOTT DA VIDSON “There’s a lot of parity in the conference this year and I think that we have as good a chance as anyone else to capture the NLC championship,’’ said Roger Karns, preparing to enter his first season as coach of the Wawasee girls' swim team, Karns, who inherits seven returning letterwinners from last season’s 10-4-1 squad, is definitely no stranger to the NLC, having spent the past six seasons as the girls’ and boys’ swim coach at North Wood High School. “I have a good idea of what the other teams in the conference have in terms of talent and that helps to make the transition easier than if I came here from somewhere where I was totally unfamiliar with the area,” said Karns. “The NLC is going to be tough and we’re going to have to be on with our performance," the coach said, adding, "Concord always has a good program; North Wood has enough back to contend for conference honors; Warsaw will be strong again, even though they’re down in numbers, and Plymouth has a large team

However, he noted that the team is a smaller group than he would have liked, with just 17 girls competing. Karns, who took over the program after former coach Tim Caldwell accepted another coaching position, remarked that there were a combination of things that attracted him to take the coaching position at Wawasee "This was an exciting opportunity for me because of the success of the Wawasee swim program and the fact that I was ready for a change and the chance to try and be successful coaching somewhere other than North Wood," he said. "The transition to the job here has gone smoothly and I’ve been happy with the move because this is a nice place to coach,” Karns added, noting that many of the girls on the team swam during the summer program which helped him to get to know them. Wawasee has some talented individuals to rely upon. Divers Dawn Firestone and Julie Gunn are the “top two divers in the conference," according to Kams. He noted that the sprinting events, with Lori Boles and Sherry Payne should also be strong while letterwinner Krista Guimond provides strength in the breaststroke "Payne has turned in some really good times in practice and Guimond has also swam very well, but we’re going to need some of our freshman (the team has six) to fill some spots to give us the depth we need," the coach said. The roster for the Lady Warriors for the 89 campaign includes: returning letterwinners Gunn. Firestone, Guimond, Payne, Tonya Perzanowski, Chris Ridings, and Sara Kline, as well as Boles, Stacy Neterer, Brandee Carlson, Shawna Miller.
