Gridders start slow but finish victorious

4 By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer Things didn’t look good for the home team as the first quarter came to a close in the Wawasee Warnors' opening football game against the Carroll Chargers last Friday. The visiting Chargers had built a 13-0 lead on the strength of a running game that was cutting through the Warrior defense like a knife through hot butter. But a glint of hope showed when the Warrior offense woke from its slumber and began moving the ball toward the end of the quarter. That glint eventually turned into a firework display as Wawasee quarterback Chris Conkling completed 82 percent of his passes to lead the Warriors to an exciting 27-25 victory' over the Wildcats. Wawasee coach Myron Dickerson said he wasn't too worried after falling behind 13-0, but that he expressed concern to his team when poor tackling led to a third Carroll touchdown. "I kept my composure at that point in time.” the coach said of the first two Carroll scores. •'When we gave up the third touchdown. 1 began to concentrate." Conkling began to concentrate too. His final stats were impressive as he completed 18-of-22 passes for 183 yards. The senior signal-caller was cool under pressure and the deep corps of Warrior receivers was up to the challenge as well "They have a fine passing attack." said Charger coach Ed Fox. “It’s not a deep-type threat but it’s the short ones. ” Wawasee's gridders finally got on the scoreboard at 8:34 of the second quarter when Conkling culminated a 12-play. 64-yard drive, with a five-yard touchdown pass to Chad Cotton Randy Cesco missed the extra point kick, leaving the Warriors behind 13-6. Cotton wasn't through making big plays when the Chargers' offense took over on offense. West Noble's boys moved the ball near midfield before Cotton pounced on a fumble by running back Matt Fingerle With momentum on their side, the Warriors took over at their own 46-yard line and marched into the end zone on 11 plays Tony Hostetter culminated the drive with a two-yard touchdown plunge at 2:15 of the second quarter, but it was receiver Tim Lilly who set the stage The Warriors were faced with a crucial third-and-seven play from the Chargers' 26-yard line when Lilly outdueled two defenders for a leaping pass reception at the twoyard line.

The momentum switched back to the Chargers toward the end of the first half, however, thariks to Fingerle. The Chargers handed the ball to their junior sensation four times in a six-play scoring drive and he responded by racking up 61 yards. Forty-seven of those yards came in a thrilling run to the three-yard line, in which Fingerle broke several tackles. Two plays later, Fingerle scored on a three-yard run and the Chargers took a 19-13 lead into the locker room at halftime. "When you have seven people who miss a back, that is unacceptable." Dickerson said of Fingerles long run “It's a collision sport and we were grabbing and reaching. " Second Half The Warriors dominated the third quarter with a long scoring drive and some solid defense. After starting off on its own 29-yard line. Wawasee's offense emphasized- the running game and took more than seven minutes off the clock in a 16-play drive. Buster Clevenger capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown and Cesco's extra point put the Warriors on top. 20-19. Wawasee's defense was solid in the third quarter as well, stopping the Chargers on four plays and forcing them to punt. For the most part. W’est Noble's offense was a spectator in that stanza “We just didn't have the ball in the third quarter." coach Fox said. “If you don’t get the ball, you don't score. '’ By the time the third quarter ended, the Warriors' offense was on the march again. Led by the running of Clevenger and the passing, of Conkling, Wawasee's squad drove 64 yards in a 13-play drive that ended with paydirt at 9:07 of the fourth quarter. Clevenger capped the drive with ,a determined six-yard jaunt through defenders into the end zone. Cesco's extra point gave the Warriors a 27-19 lead. With their backs to the wall, the Chargers responded in positive fashion down the stretch. Led by Fingerle. the Carroll running attack moved the ball 51 yards to the 12-yard line before Dan Cinder found Mike Hefner with a touchdown pass The score now stood at 27-25 and the Chargers had to try for the two-point conversion in order to tie the game Defensive lineman Tom Flees made one of the biggest plays of the game on the ensuing play, stopping the Chargers' off-tackle running play and securing the contest for the Warriors Carroll's gridders would get the ball back for one last try but. with time running down, the Chargers had to rely on an inade-
