Church sign at Wawasee Heights serves a purpose
I By SCOTT DAVIDSON Staff Writer Words that convey a message on a sign can carry a great deal of significance and that’s what a lot of people can notice if they pay attention to the sign in front of the Wawasee Heights Baptist Church in Syracuse. “We try to be very careful and tasteful with the words that we put on our sign and our assistant pastor Jim Rodgers is the man responsible for the sign,” commented Pastor Jerry Walden of the Syracuse church. Walden, who became pastor at Wawasee Heights in September of 1987, said that the church tries to change the message on the sign once a month. “The sign gets changed more often in the summertime and also when we have a lot of special activities going on that we need to announce,” said Walden. Wawasee Heights, which was built at its present location in 1967, is located in a high traffic are.' 1 v hich affords a great number of persons the opportunity to see what is on the Wawasee

Heights sign when they drive by. “We know that a lot of people are seeing our sign since we are located in a prime location right across from the high school but I'm not sure exactly what kind Os an impact the messages do have on people that see and read it,” commented Walden. “There are really three types of reasons for the different messages that we put up on our sign," remarked Walden. He explained that sometimes the sign contains welcomes or farewells as in the case when a family leaves the church (area). Another use for the sign is to announce upcoming special events that the church will be having that the community needs to know about. The final reason for a message on the church’s sign, according to Pastor Walden, is just to have an idea there that gives people something to think about. Walden stated that sometimes the sign carries a message that ties it into the specific principles that are being taught inside of the church. “We try to have themes that tie the message on the sign in

to different times of the year and sometimes the message is similar to what the lesson may be that we are studying in our church services,” said Walden. Well aware that his church’s sign is in a heavily traveled area (across from Wawasee High School), Walden knows that many people see the message on the sign day after day. “We have many different types of people that see our sign day in and day out and hopefully the repetition of seeing it will help them to pick something up off of it (a message),” said Walden. We see signs everyday as we drive throughout the area (billboards, business signs, etc.) and we hardly pay them a second glance. But the next time you happen to be driving on SyracuseWebster road and you go past the Wawasee Heights Baptist Church, take a glance at the sign in front, and to your surprise, there just might be a message on it that will enrich your life or at least make you think a little bit.

Fall programs at the Christian Church
By JEREMY BEER The Christian Church of Milford has set its calendar of events for the months of September, October, and November. The church is looking forward to activities such as the revival, Homecoming, and a church panel discussion. The Christian Activities Center near the church will also be busy during the next few months. During junior worship on Sunday, Sept. 10, youth minister Brian Wilcox will kickoff a new type of ministry with the youth called “SKlTuations.” According to Chris Mahan, the minister at the Christian Church, the youth will be divided into teams of five and then perform short skits relating to real-life situations. The youth will probably continue to do these skits on Sunday mornings. The church revival begins on Sunday, Sept. 24, and last until Thursday, Sept. 28, when Gene Higgins will give a night-long concert. Higgins, who on most nights will do a 15-minute preconcert, is a well-respected publisher, song writer, recording artist, and producer. The speaker at the revival will be Dale Holzbauer. Most of his message at the revival will be directed to adults, although Sunday night’s message, says Mahan, may be slightly bent towards the youth. Revival services will start at 6:45 p.m., with the exception of the Sunday and Thursday services, which begin at 6:15 and 7, respectively. Also in September, women’s aerobics sessions will be held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9 in the morning. Mahan will kick-off evening services on September 10 that will focus on I Corinthians and will be slightly informal, in that the congregation may ask questions during the service. Mahan will begin a new preaching series during the morning service on the 24th about “Leadership.” A mother/son pizza and putt-putt golf outing is scheduled for Saturday the 16th, which is also the day of the monthly men’s prayer breakfast, and the youth will travel to Potato Creek State Park for their fall retreat on the 27th. All this ends a very busy month for the Christian Church. In October, the Christian Ac-

Later that night, from 7:30 to 9, the junior and senior high members may use the center. On Monday evenings at 7, church members under the age of 30 can use the CAC, and on Thursdays at 7 the CAC is reserved for members over 30. This schedule will continue at least through November. On October 22, the church will have its “Homecoming”, which is an opportunity for missions that the church supports to send items and pictures so that they can be set on display. Each mission will have its own display set up in the CAC. Some mission representatives will also be present to speak to the church of their experiences and accomplishments. There will also

be various activities and meals throughout the “Homecoming.” Later in the month, on October 29, Mahan will begin a preaching series on the salvation experience. The three main activities or programs scheduled for November are the Indiana Christian Senior High Youth Convention, the Michiana Christian Seniors Rally, and the church panel discussion. The Youth Convention is held in Indianapolis on November 10, and the Seniors Rally is for Senior Adults on the 16th. According to Mahan, the Panel Discussion is a chance for members of the congregation to ask questions of himself and the church elders. The questions can be about anything, and Mahan says that panel discussions are always fun because of the variety of inquiries.
