The only key loss to graduation was in the person of Mike Leedy,

The Warriors began "official” practice August 7, although many members of the team had been playing in tournaments throughout the area during the off-season. “We’ve been working on conditioning and our technique while, at the same time, players have also been competing for positions on the team,” the coach said. one singles spot again this season. “Jason has improved this summer by playing in tournament competitions and he has been playing extremely well in practice,” commented Brady. The rest of the singles and doubles positions on the varsity squad are expected to be manned by seniors Kermit Kropf (the Warriors’ number two singles player last year), Adam Wilson, Chris Shidler and Jerry Smith, along with junior Jerry Hutchinson and sophomore Mason Robbins. “I think that we’ll be able to go to 7-8 players on the varsity squad and not lose much with our depth this year," Brady said. The remaining 11 players on the Warriors roster are expected to lend depth, when needed, to the varsity squad while also making up the JV team. “We have a good group this year, with players who have all played the game before, and we also have six freshmen out who look like a good group," the coach commented. The rest of the Warrior roster includes upperclassmen Aaron Sincroft, Brian Scott, Derek Sparks, Andy Dunithan and Shane Bucher and freshmen Chris Ganshorn, Tim Whiteman, Brian Baker, Ryan Van Hook, Daren Wagoner and Minh Tran. “I think that we’ll have a winning season this year and we re also looking to move up at least one spot in the conference standings.” Brady said. The Warriors concluded the 1988 season 7-8 overall, with a 3-4 mark in the NLC (which placed them sixth in the final conference standings). Despite the depth and the quality of his returning players, Brady admits that the season won’t be an easy one. “Most of the teams in the NLC didn’t lose very much from last season and that should make for some tough matches. Plymouth and Concord are probably the toughest two teams while Goshen has a super singles lineup and Warsaw will field a strong team again this year." Brady said. The Warriors will open the season with matches on the road against West Noble (Thursday),
Whitko (next Tuesday) and Central Noble (August 30). “We’ll be looking for a 3-0 start and consistency in those first matches by just playing our game," emphasized Brady The squad will have its first home match of the year when it hosts Concord August 31. “I think that we re going to be ready to play this season, the players have a good attitude and we think that we are going to be able to win,” Brady concluded.

Harriers shoot for lofty goals

The Wawasee Warriors boys' cross country team turned in its best performance in school history last year, when it finished the season as the 14th-ranked team in Indiana. This year’s team isn’t going to rest on its laurels, however. In fact, the team is shooting for a goal that would surpass last season's record-setting performance. “This year’s goal is we want to be in the top nine in ’89," said coach Jerry Minton. Team-MVP Jeff Carey and fellow standout Steve Eastman have graduated but the Warriors have a solid returning cast to help them toward their goals. Leading the way is senior Jason Douglas, a two-time allstate honorable mention selection. Douglas was the team's best

Lady linkers hope to keep improving
| By MITCHELL STINSON Sports Writer
The Wawasee Lady Warriors girls' golf team has shown steady improvement in the young 1989 season and coach Mark Timpe hopes to see the trend continue. “I think they’re all improving but it’s too early to tell what we're going to do this season,” he said. Four returnees will try to make up for the graduation of standouts Michelle Katsanis and Barb Butler. Teresa West is the top linkster among the returning quartet of seniors. "Teresa is the most experienced of all our golfers,” Timpe said. “She averaged 53.5 last year.” Other returnees include Darcey Smith, Audra Bouse and Jennifer Corn. Rounding out the team is a senior newcomer named Shadow Newcomer. Smith saw plenty of action last season and has shown the most improve-

clutch performer at the big meets last season. “Based on last year, he should be one of the best in the area in northern Indiana,” Minton said. Another important returnee is Eric Mock, a senior who was named to the all-Northern Lakes Conference team last season. Other returnees who will be counted on for important contributions will be senior Cuong Reed and sophomore Eric Streby. "Those four, we’re going to count on a lot,” Minton said. Other contributors include Chad Hoffert, Chad Jones. Scott Wheat and Ryan Shoemaker. The Warriors have a nice mix of veteran runners who know what it’s like to compete at the state level, and Minton thinks that will help the team. “They were at the state (meet) once, they remember it and they all liked it,” Minton said. “It gives them incentives.” Ju,st like last year, the
ment, according to coach Timpe. ■ ’ V The Lady Warriors took a detour on the road to improvement when they dropped a 233-251 decision to Manchester in a home match Monday. The loss dropped Wawasee’s dual meet record to 0-2. Coach Timpe was still optimistic after the loss, however. He said the girls have made strides toward becoming better golfers and he’s looking for more improvement once the season progresses. All of Wawasee’s lady linksters improved after their August 14 opening match loss against Goshen, except for Smith, who didn’t participate against the Lady Redskins. West went from a 67 against Goshen to a 51 in Northern Lakes Conference action Wednesday, Aug. 16. Bouse improved from a 66 to a 53 in that same time period, Corn
Plymouth Rockies will be fighting the Warriors every step of the way in the NLC. The two teams finished in a deadlock for first place in the division in 1988. Plymouth went on to take third place at state competition. Girls Team Looks Strong Although they may have been overshadowed by the boy’s team, the girls had a solid 6-6 season in 1988. The team is still young, with no seniors, but they could be a force to contend with this year. Returnees Lori Gargett, Mel Hobbs and Staci Free! form the backbone of the team. Big things are also expected from freshman

lowered her score from 66 to 55 and Newcomer dropped 12 strokes as well. Wawasee’s squad finished third at the NLC meet, which was held at the Wawasee Golf Club. Goshen was first with a teamtotal of 191 and Northridge took second with a 208. The Lady Warriors grabbed the number 3 spot with a 218 and Warsaw pulled up the rear at 229. Smith carded a team-low 105 at the Kokomo Invitational last Thursday. She came in with a 54 on the front nine and a 51 on the back. West had a 116, Corn recorded a 120 and Bouse carded a 126. Newcomer continued to improve, notching nine-hole totals of 67 and 70 en route to a 137 total. The Wawasee squad finished fifth in the Class AA division with a score of 467. Timpe said the NLC will be tough this season, with the Lady

Angie Garner, who was a junior high standout. “Garner is a freshman who could actually be the number one runner in the first meet,” Minton said. Sophomore Tiffany Titus rounds out the solid five-person nucleus. Other girls who could contribute include Gina Minton, Amy Logan and Sara Moerchen. “By the end of the year, they’ll be a real competitive team,” Minton said. “We definitely have the goal to get out of the sectional while third place would be a real good goal for them in the NLC.” Fine Season Opener For The boys’ team opened the
Redskins being the team to beat. After a 7-5 campaign last year, the team goal is to shoot for the break-even mark. "We're hoping to be a .500 team,” the coach said. “(But) There’s going to be some pretty stiff competition we’ll be playing.” Junior varsity matches are listed on the Lady Warriors’ schedule of matches and Timpe hopes he can put a JV team together this season. season in fine fashion Tuesday with a first-place finish at the East Noble Invitational. Wawasee’s harriers edged second-place East Noble, 105-107, in the 14-team field. No times were available but Jason Douglas finished second overall and Eric Streby took sixth. “It was a real good start,” Minton said. “That was a confidence builder.” In girls’ action, Wawasee’s team finished fifth out of 10 teams. Lori Gargett placed 15th overall and Angie Garner came in 18th.
