Carol Speicher enjoys her job as the custodian for the community building

Carol Speicher of Milford has tailored her life around a philosophy of being with her children . Eric. 14 and Ryan, 10. "I always wanted to stay home with the kids, so while they were little, I baby-sat," she says. With a core group of about five children. Carol baby-sat for eight years. "I enjoy being with children,” Carol adds, "I guess I'd have to if I baby-sat for eight years.” After the kids started school, Carol gave up the baby-sitting business and started her own cleaning business. She has never formally advertised, but credits "word of mouth" advertising for her ability to stay busy working. "I cleaned the post office and think maybe people saw me there and found out,” Carol remarks.

Going back to the desire to be with her children, Carol does not "work as much during the summer." She enjoys being able to go to the beach or to participate in other activities with the boys instead. "It's nice that it worked out that way," Carol qomments. Besides her cleaning business. Carol also works as the custodian of the Milford Comnfßnity Building. "I schedule all events and collect the money" for the building, she explains. She also buys cleaning supplies and makes certain that things are functioning properly at

Pastor Jim Davey gave the invocation. There were 300 guests present. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Corbin. North Webster. beside a unity candle and Bible. A basket of pink tea roses and ivy was placed on the organ in memory of bride s grandparents. The bride wore a white satin, floor-length gown with elbowlength puffed sleeves, natural waistline and silk bows circling the hemline of the skirt. The bodice was adorned with pearls and sequins and styled with a lace, satin and chiffon panel insert and choker-style lace collar Her fingertip veil was attached to
a circular headpiece of flowers and pearls. She carried a small white Bible that was carried by her mother when she was married 22 years ago. The Bible was topped with a nosegay of pink and mauve roses, pink lilies, ivy and white lace ribbons and bows. Patty Birkel, Syracuse, was matron of honor. She wore a floor-length gown of pink satin with short sleeves and a lace bow on the back. She carried a nosegay of pink and mauve azaleas, sweetheart roses and baby's breath surrounded with white lace, satin bows and streamers. Bridesmaids were Jane Moore, Syracuse, and Shelley Buchanan. Hartford City. Ann Marie Corbin, North Webster, sister of the bride, was flower girl. All of the bride’s attendants wore gowns and carried bouquets identical to that of the honor attendant. . Timothy Carter, Pierceton, served as best man. Groomsmen were Scott Jewson, Leesburg, brother of the bridegroom, and Michael Buchanan, Columbus. Ohio. The groomsmen also seated guests. Ring bearer was Matthew Stump, Claypool. The bride's mother chose a tealength dress in a pale, steel-blue color, with pleated skirt. She wore a corsage of pink and mauve miniature tea roses and baby azaleas The bridegroom's mother selected a mauve colored street-length dress with pleated skirt. She wore a corsage of pink and mauve miniature carnations and baby's breath Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held in the church fellowship hall The wedding cake was baked and decorated by Wava Bauer. the building. As the custodian, Carol also makes a report about the building at the monthly MAD, Milford Area Development, meetings. In her three and a half years as custodian, Carol has only once scheduled two groups for the same time in the building. "And that was in the first couple of weeks" on the job, she adds. Os the job Carol tells, “I really enjoy it. and it doesn't take a lot of time." The fact that it does not require a lot of time is a definite plus for Carol since she has many other interests that she likes to pursue. “I like to ride a bike, I love to read. My husband (Larry) says I'm in my own little world when 1 read," she laughs. In the winter months Carol finds herself cross-stitching — “it’s habit forming!" she exclaims. Besides this needlework. Carol has just started making country craft things. A bigger project that Carol and her family are taking on for the first time this year involves an orchard that they recently purchased. A couple of miles southeast of town, the orchard has about 20 trees. Rasberries, apples and cherries are all found in this newly purchased orchard and although rasberry and cherry season have passed, apple season is just on the horizon. “This is all new to us.” Carol admits, "and it is going to take a lot of time.” In the future Carol says they may build a home out near their orchard. "My husband has always wanted to be out in the country," Carol says. .. A As a member of the Living GospeTfffilfch in Nappanee. Carol says she teaches Sunday school. She describes this work enthusiastically which seems to parallel the eagerness with which the children approach learning in her classroom. "They are such fun to be around." says Carol smilingly. “At one time." she shares, "1 thought maybe I should have been a teacher since I like kids so much." Os her own children, Carol says. "I have always felt that I should be with them (her children) . . . we've had to make some sacrifices and my children are worth it. ”

Syracuse, is shown with Republican Congressman John Hiler in his office in Washington, D.C. Carrie and her mother spent 10 days out east this Summer, spending five days in Washington. D.C. While in Washington, they visited the Smithsonian Institution. Ford's Theatre, the White House. Arlington National Cemetery. Bureau of Engraving. FBI building, monuments and memorials and the national zoo. At Hiler’s office, he gave them passes for the gallery of the House and Senate and the Schmahls were able to see all the senators which is a rarity since they aren’t usually there at the same time. Carrie and her mother stated that Hiler was very gracious and spent quite a lot of time talking with them. Mrs. Schmahl said that all the tours they took were free and the public transportation is free. She encourages everyone to visit the capital. Carrie, daughter of Don and Judy Schmahl of Syracuse, will be a freshman this year at Wawasee High School.
