$30,000 from the commissioners' budget. Instead, they suggested that KDI get the funding from the CVB. leaving that organization with $140,000. However, according to an unofficial opinion from the state's attorney general's office. the council may appropriate the innkeeper tax money, but may not dictate how it is spent. At one time, the innkeeper tax money was to be used solely for tourism but now can be used for promotion of industrial development as well. KDI does work towards industrial development in the county. The issue of the CVB and KDI funding is expected to come before the council at its September 5 budget hearings. HUD costing taxpayers The financial fallout from massive defaults on governmentinsured mobile home loans in the mid-1980 s continues to plague the Department of Housing and Urban Development and could cost taxpayers as much as SSOO million by 1993.
