Bucher brothers are successful water skiers
(By SCOTT DAVIDSON Sports Writer Starting at a sport at a young age is the prerequisite for many athletes to become successful in their chosen area of competition and both Shane and Brandon Bucher of Syracuse, a pair of water skiing brothers, give proof to that idea. “I started getting the boys involved in skiing when they were only three or four by pulling them along the shore," remarked the boys' father, Don. Living at Cindonway Shores, with their own lake in the backyard, the Bucher brothers have had plenty of opportunities to practice their craft. “We ski at least once a day and a lot of times more often than that,” said Shane, who will be a sophomore at Wawasee High School when school begins. He added that water skiing practice and competition for himself and Brandon usually begins in late May and doesn’t end until sometime in October, as long as it doesn't get too cold. “I started tournament skiing when I was five and I really enjoy it because it’s a lot of fun for me to compete,” said Brandon, who will be a sixth grader at Milford School this fall. With his performance in the Midwest Regional Championships held in Illinois this past weekend. Brandon is now preparing to compete for the second time in the National Water Ski Championships, which will be held August 15-19 in Zachary. La. “I hope to place in the top five at the nationals in the slalom and I also want to be able to compete in the tricks event." commented Brandon about next week's event. He has already qualified for the slalom event with his record setting effort at the regional championships this past weekend (he broke the regional mark that had stood since 1963) and hopes to qualify for trick competition after a local tournament this weekend. Shane commented that he enjoys competing in all three of the skiing events (slalom, tricks and jump) while Brandon admitted that he enjoys the slalom competition the best. "You get the chance to meet a lot of people at the tournaments and I've stayed

with water skiing because it's fun and I found out that it w ; as something that I was good at." stated Shane. Water skiing is definitely a family affair for the Buchers. In addition to Shane and Brandon, younger sister Shanda also skis on the Cindonway Shores Ski Team, as does Peggy, the boys’ mother, and Don The lake behind the family's home on Cindonway Shores was dug in 1978 by Wayne Bucher (Don's father) and it serves as one of the hosts, along with Camelot Lakes, for area skiing tournaments each year. Cindonway Shores and Camelot Lakes, were chosen recently as the host site for next year's Regional Water Ski Tournament to be held in August. Shane, who also plays baseball and tennis at Wawasee. said that skiing really becomes easy once you learn each of the events. “The key is your form. You have to have the right body position all the time and be aggressive when you're skiing or you're going to have problems," he said. Both of the boys commented that they had taken quite a few falls, but both also laughed and admitted that you get used to them after awhile. In addition to their numerous individual .honors captured in various skiing competitions, the Bucher brothers were able to share an honor this past weekend at the regionals when they were chosen for the Midwest Region Junior Development Team. Stover Hire is back on winning track
Veteran five-liter hydroplane driver Stover Hire of Syracuse is back on the winning track on the race circuit after struggling through a four-year drought in the field of hydroplane competition. "It is certainly a vindicating and pleasing victory.” said Hire after driving his "Hire Voltage" to a victory in the 1989 Governor’s Cup Hydroplane Championship in Ypsilanti. Mich., earlier this summer. "It was a lot of hard work, much time, and a lot of money, but it gives me incentive to continue. I know I’m on the right track again." Hire added. Hire recorded his victory on the Ford Lake course in Ypsilanti by edging Dick Delsner, another Ford Lake veteran, for the honor. Delsner, competing in the oneliter modified class, ran his high point champion "South Paw” at an average speed of 90.3 mph and beat the five-mile, four-lap record for the class by 13.86 mph. But Hire did even better at the Governor's Cup competition. Using the best lap he established in his outstanding first day of the race of 109.8 mph, he beat the five-liter class lap mark by 23.85' mph to take the Cup. Hire, who had struggled with his "Hire Voltage" through a four-year drought, felt that the

MAKING WAVES — Stover Hire, a resident of Syracuse, cuts through the water in his “Hire Voltage” hydroplane racing boat during a competition. the' Hoosier Dome with its expanded seating capacity of 37,500. The date for this high school basketball tournament is March 24,1990. “Our record of 61 straight sellout crowds demonstrates a tremendous interest in the boys' basketball state finals,” Commissioner Cato announced to a press conference in the Hoosier Dome recently. “This attendance record was achieved without a public sale of tickets. Moving to the Hoosier Dome on a trial basis assures loyal basketball fans all over Indiana that they will have an opportunity to see the state finals by purchasing tickets in a public sale.
think that next year I’ll have a really good chance to do well at the Regionals and qualify for the Nationals too,” added Shane. No matter what happens, it’s a safe bet that the Bucher brothers will continue to “make waves” on the water skiing circuit wherever they're competing.
“A large number of tickets will be held for the four participating schools and for each member school in the state, and the rest of the tickets will be placed on sale immediately to the general public,” said Cato. Commissioner Cato said, “We’re making this announcement at this time to make sure that everyone has the proper time to plan ahead for this once-in-a lifetime attraction. The Hoosier Dome will be host to the NCAA Regional the preceding week and the arena will be set up for 37,500 fans. Our public ticket orders will help us select the right configuration. We could go from 28,000 to 37,5000 r more.” All tickets will be $lO (good for all three state finals games) and all seats will be reserved. Ticket orders from the general publicare being accepted Currently at the IHSAA office, 9150 North Meridian Street, P.O. Box 40650, Indianapolis, Ind., 46240. Ticket order forms are available at 119 Farrh Bureau Insurance agencies located in every county and camera-ready copies have been sent to every newspaper in the state as well. All ticket orders must be accompanied by either check or money order. There’s been much discussion and a lot of questions asked about moving to the Hoosier Dome with unlimited seating, ever since Indiana moved its football tournament to the Dome in 1984 with great success. For the last two years, the football attendance in the Dome topped 41,000. "We’ve had 61 straight sell-out crowds for our state finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse (1928-42, 1946-71), the State Fairgrounds Coliseum (1942-45), Indiana University Assembly Hall (1972-74) and Indianapolis Market Square Arena (1975-89),” the commissioner pointed out. “Our executive committee felt.

after a strong recommendation from the executive staff, that some day we would want to go to the Hoosier Dome for a one-year trial, and we emphasize the oneyear part. Right now we expect to r.eturn to Market Square in 1991.” Cato said. "I think we owe it to all of the died-in-the-wool basketball fans who could buy tickets annually for an NCAA tournament or the Pan American Games, but still couldn't purchase a ticket for the Indiana high school tournament. “We know there will be large numbers of transplanted Hoosiers and, perhaps, even some interested neighbors across the country who will want to take advantage of this opportunity to see the Indiana state basketball tournament for the first time. They’ve heard so much about it from relatives, from the media and more recently from the tremendously popular movie “Hoosiers.” "It will be a memorable homecoming for all those departed families who still have a strong identity with the rich tradition that is associated all over the world with Indiana high school basketball.” “With the national attention it seems sure to attract, what better way to give basketball addicts everywhere a closer glimpse of the world’s most publicized high school basketball tournament. Where but Indiana would such a huge celebration be more appropriate?” concluded Cato. win at the Governor’s Cup was an important one. “The boat I have now was made in 1985, and it has taken me this long to get it dialed in," he said. “We’ve entered two races, and won two. It is our first consistent winning start in four years.” Before capturing the championship at the Governor’s Cup race, Hire added a first place performance at the Eastern Divisionals in Raleigh, N.C., the
