10 YEARS AGO, AUG. 1.1979 It seems Becky Doll is providing a drinking fountain for Our Town’s animals. Actually, Becky put a bucket out to catch the water from her air conditioner and the dogs are taking advantage of the water being caught in the bucket. Jogging and running are big things throughout the nation right now, and Milford can lay claim to an outstanding competitor in most all local races. Homer Miller, a reside f West Catherine Street, ha. _en competing in races throughout the area with considerable success. He was a track and cross country star at North Wood High School near Nappanee where he graduated in 1971. The family of Julie A. Garza of Milford held a reception in her honor at the Milford Fire Station Saturday afternoon where friends could greet her prior to her entering the U.S. Army for a four-year tour of duty. About 150 attended. Julie is the 19-year-old daughter of Lydia Garza of Milford and Arnold Garza of Syracuse. Receiving a scholarship for the second consecutive year, awarded by the Warsaw Business and Professional Women’s Club, is Pam F. Custer, 19, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wade Mishler, Milford, and a 1978 graduate of Wawasee High School. Her career objective is radiologic technologist and she will be attending the Medical College of Georgia. 20 YEARS AGO, JULY 30, 1969 Norman Ray Vanlaningham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Vanlaningham of r 2 Milford, celebrated his 10th birthday Tuesday night at his home with members of Webelo den cub scout pack 47. Indiana state senator John F. Augsburger of Milford is a member of the health and welfare study committee. Milford captured the Lakeland school corporation’s junior high baseball league championship
I Ik Z* I ? I e EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH — These women were honored as employees of the month at Lakeland Loving Care Center, Milford. Shirley Miller, on the left, social services director, was named Employee of the Month for June. She has been employed at the center since May 9,1983. She w as born and raised in the Whitley and Noble County area and was one of six children. In 1949, she married Waldo Miller who passed away in April 1987. They had two daughters, Linda and Ronelle. Mrs. Miller also has two grandchildren. Mrs. Miller has worked in the long term care field since 1972. She has been a qualified medication aide, activity director, office manager, and now a social services director. When she first came to Lakeland Loving Care her first four years of employment were as a QMA. When she returned to work following her husband’s death, she assumed the role of social services director. When asked w hat she likes best about her job, Mrs. Miller said she enjoys meeting and helping people — residents and their families both. On the right is Glenda Waddell, 7-3 shift QMA who has been named Employee of the Month for July. She began working at the center as a nurse aide in January 1987. In October of 1987 she received her certification as a qualified medication aide. Mrs. Waddell w as born in Kendallville and has spent her growing years in the Milford area. She and her husband, Randy, have two daughters. Amber and Jessica. Her mother also works with her as a housekeeper at Lakeland Loving Care. Mrs. Waddell likes her job as a QMA. She especially enjoys the opportunity to witness positive relationships between the residents, as well as between the staff and the residents. She enjoys friendships with her fellow employees as well.

last week as the Trojans defeated the Syracuse Sox by the score of 8 to 7. Jan and Donnie Beer led the Milford hitting attack as they each collected two hits for the winners. Mrs. Richard Kaiser of r 2 Milford was honored at a breakfast recently at the home of Mrs. Lewis Speicher on r 2. The breakfast theme was “Rock-A-Bye Baby.” The thirty guests presented baby gifts to Mrs. Kaiser. William G. Burgett, Milford, employee of the United Telephone Company for the past 23 years, has been promoted to district plant supervisor. 30 YEARS AGO, JULY 30,1959 Mrs. Robert Overstedt, editor of The Milford Mail, left today (Thursday) for Canada where she will be Camp Director of an international Girl Scout and Girl Guide encampment at Amberly, Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Myers entertained at dinner Tuesday evening for the employees and their wives. After dinner they took a ride on the Wawasee Belle. Junior Bucher, John Schultz, Junior Bleile and Terry Haab are spending the week in Florida in the area around Orlando and Silver Springs. Mrs. Clifford Replogle has accepted employment as bookkeeper with Sharp’s Hardware in Milford starting August 24. A stork shower was given in honor of Mrs. Floyd Yoder on July 21 at Bethel church. After the games the shower gifts were opened and refreshments of assorted cookies, iced tea, and lemonade were served by the committee consisting of Mrs. James Chambers, Mrs. Hazel Vanlaningham, and Mrs. Jack Wolferman. Joy Faulkner is employed at the Pickwick Theater in Syracuse during the summer. Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Rassi are entertaining Mrs. Rassi’s sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. William Yturriaga and Nancy of San Francisco, Calif.
