20 YEARS AGO. AUG. 2, 1979 Members of the Syracuse Town Board met in special session Monday night and named William R. Hess. 62.125 W. North Street, to fill the vacancy in Ward 4. Mrs. Noble D. Myers has as week end guests, her grandson. Steve LeCount and wife. Nahcy. from Bloomington. On Sunday her daughter, Mrs. Jean LeCount. and granddaughters, Kathy and Debbie and Steve Biggs of Huntington spent the day. The Ebenezer's Ladies Aid met in the home of Ruth Smith on Thursday. Wilma Beck presided over the meeting. Devotions were given by Ruth Smith and Anna Bechtold. There were 12 members present. Opal Nolan, president of the Lois Circle of the Calvary United Methodist Women, Syracuse, presided over the meeting “Mary of Bethany. A Lady Who Cares" by Rev. Davis was reviewed by Mrs. Allen Shively. Hostesses were Eva Smith and Mrs. Raymond Bitnew for the 13 members present. Mrs. William Fiedeke. Mrs. Leon Summy and Mrs. Paul Brimbeck were hostesses for the Lake Tippecanoe Ladies Bridge Club on Wednesday. July 25. The door prize winner was Mrs. Daniel Sherman. Winners in the bridge game were Mrs Philip Spear, Mrs. George Rea. Mrs.' Hershel Bent, Mrs. Wayne Bucher and Mrs. William Johnson. 20 YEARS AGO. JULY 30. 1969 In Kosciusko County at Lake Wawasee. anglers are catching northern pike, one weighing 16 pounds and 9 ounces. They also are catching smallmouth bass.

From the Syracuse Police Log is a weekly feature which presents a sampling of the incidents the officers from the Syracuse Fire Department and Syracuse Police Department are called upon to deal with: * THURSDAY, JULY 27 A company calling to request someone to work on its sprinkler system was advised to try an installer. ° The state highway department was notified of cement and gravel in the roadway. A caller reported the objects on SR 13S. FRIDAY, JULY 28 Police were unable to find a person who was reported passed out in a car. A person came to the dispatcher’s office and reported a person passed out in a car near the Huntington Street railroad crossing. The officer on duty checked the area and reported the person and car must have left. It was requested he also check the Main Street crossing. The officer reported checking all three crossings in town, he was unable to locate anything. Contact with the state fire marshal’s office was suggested to a businessman wishing to have the business undergo a fire inspection. SATURDAY. JULY 29 Lake patrol officers rescued a man and caught his boat. The dispatcher received a report of a runaway boat and a man in the water. The lake patrol officer -reported he had the boat in tow and the man out of the water A lake patrol officer was notified after there was a report of a boat speeding through the channel at Ward Park. The speeding boat almost caused an accident SUNDAY, JULY 30 CSX was notified after a person reported a train was in the middle of the railroad crossing before the crossing lights and crossing arms were activated

-i SESQUICENTENNIAL PICTURES DONATED — Creative Touch Studio. Syracuse, donated over 400 pictures related to the 1987 Syracuse Sesquicentennial Celebration to the Syracuse Public Library. The photos are of various events and activities such as fund raisers for the mayor’s race, the mayor’s banquet, queen pageant, parades and lots more. Rosalyn Jones, librarian, stated these photos will be added to the historical collection in the library. Persons are welcome to visit the library and look at the photos. Mrs. Jones stated anyone who can help identify persons in the photos are welcome to do so. However, the photos may not leave the library.
