Dana shares up
Dana Corporation announced July 19 that net income for the six months ending June 30 was SBI.B million on sales of $2.6 billion. This compares to $77.8 million a year earlier on sales of $2.5 billion. Earrings per share for the first six months were $2.01, up from the $1.91 reported for the same period a year ago. The company reported net income for the second quarter of 1989 of $42.9 million compared to $42.7 million for the second quarter last year. Sales for the three months ending June 30 were $1.3 billion, slightly better than the previous high for a single quarter established in the first three months of this year. Earnings for the second quarter of both 1989 and 1988 were $1.05 per share. During the first quarter of 1989, Dana received a payment of sls million in connection with the termination of a merger agreement. Offsetting this payment were related expenses and an increase in reserves to cover anticipated environmental costs. The net es-

feet of these items was to increase after-tax income by approximately $4 million, or 10 cents per share for the quarter. Sales of vehicular components to the original equipment manufacturers continued to increase but at the more moderate growth rate forecasted for 1989. Sales of components into the light truck market were up an additional 11 percent over last year’s high demand while sales of parts to the medium and heavy truck markets increased by six percent. The highway trailer market was the only segment of the company’s heavy duty highway vehicle market that was down during the first six months. Total sales into Dana’s highway vehicle markets for the first six months of 1989 were up five percent over the same period last year. Sales to the mobile-off-highway market, which includes construction and agriculture equipment, continue at the strong pace noted for the first quarter this year. Compared to the first six months of 1988, sales into this market are up 21 percent. Sales of original equipment components to the industrial market are up six percent from a year ago. The company’s sales into the distribution markets are down less than two percent from a year ago. Automotive distribution sales improved during the second quarter but remain about four percent below last year’s exceptionally strong sales of automotive replacement parts. He is an instructor known worldwide who has earned over 500 merits from the Professional Photographers of America for his photography and knowledge. The art of seeing light outdoors and accenting it with artificial light to give photographs real impact was one of many things taught. Along with posing subjects outdoors, he also taught the students how to paint with light no matter the location or kind of light — whether artificial or natural. Demonstrations on how to record on film what the eye actually sees was especially interesting, especially for photos of brides and romantic couples at sunset. Moser was also one of the models Blair used while working with the students. She was awarded a merit by the Professional Photographers of America, and given credit toward her degree through the Hawkeye Institute of Technology.

Sales from Dana’s international operations were up two percent compared to the same period in 1988. Gerald B. Mitchell, chairman and chief executive officer, said, “We forecasted moderate growth during the first half of 1989 compared to 1988 and our sales are in line with that forecast. The outlook remains mixed in Dana’s markets for the second half of the year. Demand is trending moderately lower across the board for truck components. Our industrial and international markets appear firm while the automotive distribution market is expected to improve after a soft first half. Given this environment, Dana operating units will increase their emphasis on asset utilization and margins over the balance of this year.” Southwood J. Morcott, president and chief operating officer, said, “We continue to see the benefits of our excellence in manufacturing and excellence in distribution programs that we have in place.
