Robert Rice, Jr. leads worship at New Salem Church
By JEREMY BEER On November 6, 1988, the New Salem Church of the Brethren gained a new pastor in Robert Rice, Jr., who replaced the interim pastor, Kenneth Hollinger. Before accepting this position with New Salem, Rice was the assistant pastor and deacon of the Walnut Church .of the Brethren in Argos. Rice feels he was called by God to go into the ministry, so when the New Salem position opened he submitted his profile and was selected. About three years ago he started a Church of the Brethren study course to prepare him for the pastor position. He will finish it next month. Then he will begin another three-year course to become an ordained minister. Beyond this preparation, though, he says that “God prepared me through various opportunities and jobs at the Walnut Church.” What Rice really enjoys about being pastor is that he is able to help build up and edify the church. Being pastor also allows him to minister the Gospel of
All Saints Episcopal Church erected in 1907
ByARTCHANEY Located on CR 1050 N. one-four mile east of SR 13. is the All Saints Episcopal Church. This building was erected in 1907 on ground given by Charles Sudlow, being two lakeside lots adjacent to his own home. A visiting Vicar ( Bishop White) had often vacationed in this area and on invitation had conducted services on lawns during the summer season. Charles Sudlow and Eli Lilly of Indianapolis, who had a summer home across the lake, were interested in establishing a church on Lake Wawasee. A loan was secured from an Indianapolis bank for $5,000. the estimated cost for the erection. This building was started in 1906 and. with the volunteer help of interested people," was completed in 1907. Services have been held here since that time. The church used assigned and volunteer Vicars until 1966, when a full-time Vicar was retained.

Jesus Christ. He says that the New Salem church gives him the opportunity to have fellowship with other Christians, who. like him, are interested in studying God’s word. As pastor, though, Rice says that he finds it difficult to understand why some people aren’t “on fire” for God. However, he just thanks God for giving him the patience and understanding to pray for them. When Rice arrived at New Salem, attendance had dwindled. The average attendance for the Sunday worship service was about 25 and for Sunday School it stood at around 15. Now, though, the 'congregation for the worship service numbers around 50 people and anywhere from 30 to 35 people attend Sunday School. Rice attributes the growth to “good fellowship.” He points out that the church has had no membership drives or similar activities to gain members. Rice thinks that most of the new members are people who used to attend New Salem and now are returning. Although he can’t pinpoint
The building was designed to be 40x100 feet in size and to be one story, and the site had been located so that it was one of the higher shores on the lake. It was designed to be as near the shore line as possible so that a view of the entire lake could be visible and the building, itself, could be observed. It was built of white brick, the location of this brick yard is unknown as the only known brick yard manufactured red bricks White bricks are softer than red bricks, but still retain their durability. When the building was originally erected, another frame building was attached to the east side, which could be used by the visiting Vicar for his convenience when he was there. This frame building has since been torn down and a beautiful home is located on the adjoining lot for the Vicar’s use. Also, a large recreation building is now located on the same lot. This is the only church building located on the 19 mile shoreline of Lake Wawasee and services are held regularly.

Freedom Chapel is non-denominational
By MARY JANE LORTON Staff W riter
A non-denominational church is where people from all denominations may come to worship together according to Ray Shanklin, pastor of the Freedom Chapel in Syracuse, Nondenominational implies freedom of worship. The Freedom Chapel does not have a ‘parish’ or ‘community’ per se. Shanklin explains, “people come from all over. . .from Indianapolis and Michigan. . .as well as from Syracuse to worship with us.” People come to nondenominational services looking for “freedom of movement of the gifts of the spirit,” says Shanklin. In a non-denominational service, Mr? MP RAY SHANKLIN people are free to worship and to praise God in a manner that suits them “. . where all the gifts of the spirit are functioning.” According to Shanklin, the gifts of the spirit are word of knowledge, word of wisdom, discerning of the spirit, gift of healing, gift of working of miracles, gift of faith, gift of prophecy, gift of tongues and the gift of interpretation. All of these gifts are “ministered by the holy spirit of God, not man,” explains Shanklin. To say that non-denominational worship allows people to worship in the manner that suits them, does not imply that a nondenominational service is not orderly. These services are organized. In a service at the Freedom Chapel, prior to the actual ‘service’ there is a period of praise and worship which in-

volves a lot of singing explains Shanklin. Next, there is a service followed by an altar call which is open to anyone who needs to receive any gifts of the spirit. Shanklin stresses that nondenominational does not mean “turning against a denomination.” Instead, persons who worship in this way do so because they are looking to improve their relationship with Christ. As a result, they have found a personal relationship with Christ. A non-denominational service involves Catholics, Baptists, Pentecostals, Methodists, etc. Freedom Chapel fellowship services started in September of 1987. Services started out in the home of Ray and Helen Shanklin, with attendance at about 22 worshipers each week. At that time, according to an article in the December 30 issue of The Mail Journal, Pastor Ray Shanklin said that when the fellowship group outgrows their home they are certain the Lord will show the way toward a larger church facility. As of July 2, services were moved to the old Wawasee Community Church of the Nazarene at the corner of Benton and Harrison streets in Syracuse. Representatives from the Freedom Chapel bought the building on June 29 and it is said to hold around 100 worshipers. Services at Freedom Chapel are on Sundays at 10 a.m. They will eventually be adding a midweek and Sunday evening service. NWUMC circles met in July The five circles of the North Webster United Methodist Church met in the church basement for a Christmas in July celebration. The president, Carlyn Cox, opened the evening’s activities with a welcome to all. Then she read an article by Marjory Holmes, “Don’t Let Me Take Life for Granted.” She also read “The Statue of Liberty” by Norman Vincent Peale. Then, everyone was off to the heavy laden tables of salads. After the dinner, things were cleared away and the fun time began. Kristian Welker sang and played some unusual Christmas carols. Wilma Conner read a Christmas story called, “The Man We do not Know.” The story was about the innkeeper and stableowner where Jesus Christ was bo>rn.

New pastor at Syracuse church
Ron Bruce came to the ministry of the Syracuse Church of God fresh out of seminary school back in mid-June. But he’s no baby-faced kid. The 51-year-old former Ohio resident had been active in the church for most of his life before deciding to show his devotion to God from the other side of the pulpit. “I’m new to the pastorate,” Bruce said. “I guess you could say I’m a late bloomer.” Bruce has had plenty of experience in the secular world as well. From 1956-60, he was in the Navy, where he served on planes that flew into hurricanes on information-gathering missions. He also spent 28 years working for an insurance group in Celina, Ohio. All the while, Bruce was a familiar face on church committees. “Even though I’m the new kid on the block, I guess I’ve got some seasoning,” he said. Bruce can’t pinpoint a specific time when he decided to become a pastor. It was a idea that evolved over the course of his life. Bruce was interested in the field early on, but he didn’t feel ready to make the commitment as a young man. In the fall of 1985 Bruce became a part-time student at the Winebrenner Seminary in Findlay, Ohio. He quit his insurance agency job and became a

full-time student in the summer of 'BB. His seminary training ended last May when he finally earned his degree. Bruce commuted from Ohio to Syracuse for his first few weeks at the Church of God. Along with his wife, Mary, he moved into the church’s parsonage on July 14. Nowadays, Bruce’s drive to work is much briefer than the 105-mile Ohio trip. Bruce’s first congregation has been very supportive in helping him adjust to this new stage of his life. His old roots have been pulled up, but new ones are being planted in the Syracuse community. “That’s what has made the transition easier, having a warm, caring group of people meeting us here,” Bruce said. In turn, Bruce wants to run a church that is responsive to the feelings of the congregation. He is excited about the church and thinks it has a lot of potential. “What we’re trying to do right now is develop a rapport with the people and see what their needs are,” Bruce said. Bruce is also anxious to acclimate himself to activities of Syracuse’s ministerial association. He has been exposed to lake communities before but the association’s boat-in worship service is an exciting new concept to him. Bruce describes these sessions as “fantastic” and he can't wait to be a participant.
